312 LA CHKOiMQUE DES ARTS <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> fleuristes belges; ses trois p<strong>et</strong>its tableaux sont d'un coloriste gras, épris <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> tons veloutés, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> chatoiements sombres, <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> note vivement j<strong>et</strong>ée. M"e <strong>de</strong> Vigne est plus délicate, avec une émo- tion, un sentiment <strong>de</strong> touche qui dénotent le peintre <strong>et</strong> le poète. M. Eyers a le grand tort <strong>de</strong> paraître indifférent à ce qu'il peint; ses tableaux sont bien arrangés, mais manquent <strong>de</strong> sensua'ité. Je veux que l'eau me vienne à <strong>la</strong> bouche <strong>de</strong>vant une peinture <strong>de</strong> fruits <strong>et</strong> qu'une fleur ait son parfum, sur <strong>la</strong> toile comme dans le jardin. Ce parfum, je le r<strong>et</strong>rouve dans les Roses <strong>de</strong> M. Van <strong>de</strong>u Bosch, baignées <strong>de</strong> lumière <strong>et</strong> détachées d'un joli fond gris. M. Van <strong>de</strong>n Bosch, lui, cherche les accents fermes, les ton? soli<strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong>, l'exécution un peu trop matérielle. Franchissons <strong>la</strong> haie; nous voici dans les champs avec MM. Heymans, Rosseeis, Baron, Coosemans, tous noms qui se sont souvent rencontrés dans mes <strong>chronique</strong>s. M. Heymans déroute à première vue par sa facture empâtée, ses silhou<strong>et</strong>tes confuses ; mais il a une vision très-personnelle du plein air, il fait sentir <strong>la</strong> <strong>de</strong>nsité <strong>de</strong> l'atmosphère, il est, avec M. Baron, le chercheur d'un certain grand style qui n'est pas commun chez les paysagistes. Sou Soleil coucha7it, travaillé au couteau, truelle dans <strong>la</strong> pâte, est comme pris à l'improviste, sur nature; il y a toujours ce côté d'à peu près, c<strong>et</strong>te ver<strong>de</strong>ur crue d'esquisse, qui ne vont pas avec <strong>la</strong> précision du tableau ; seulement, ce<strong>la</strong> est trèssavant chez notre homme <strong>et</strong> personne ne marque mieux, avec plus <strong>de</strong> justesse ni plus d'entente <strong>de</strong> l'<strong>et</strong>î<strong>et</strong>, le brouil<strong>la</strong>ssemeut du crépuscule, l'indéci- sion <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> soirs <strong>de</strong> pluie, le grandissement <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> solitu<strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong>. C'est un vrai f<strong>la</strong>mand, épais, soli<strong>de</strong>, consciencieux, ne s'en rapportant qu'au témoignage <strong>de</strong> ses yeux, très-circonspect sur le chapitre <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> pal<strong>et</strong>te, têtu dans sa recherche, nullement spirituel ni élégant ; en voilà assez pour constituer une personnalité. On en pourrait dire autant <strong>de</strong> M- Jan Stobbaerts, le peintre brutal <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> p<strong>et</strong>its ménages anversois; mais <strong>la</strong> brutalité <strong>de</strong> ce <strong>de</strong>rnier va trop loin <strong>et</strong> visiblement se comp<strong>la</strong>ît dans une afl'ectation <strong>de</strong> grosse peinture, d'exécution bavocheuse, <strong>de</strong> dé<strong>la</strong>yages <strong>de</strong> suie malpropres. Tel est le Passe-temps au dimanche, un morceau très-naivement vu pourtant, d'une tournure toute popu<strong>la</strong>ire, indiquant un observateur <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> bonne trempe. Le C/iioi qui lâche sa proie est moins féroce d'exécution. Trois paysages <strong>de</strong> M. Baron, une Fin d'hiver, aigre, à lumière coupante, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> terrains Ln Campine, <strong>et</strong> <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Peupliers en nictomiie, à feuil<strong>la</strong>ges dorés, d'un ton pâle <strong>et</strong> doux. Trois Asselbergs, tous trois peints dans <strong>la</strong> forêt <strong>de</strong> Fontainebleau^ un peu correctement sans le mystère qu'y ont su m<strong>et</strong>tre Rouiseau, Mill<strong>et</strong>, Diaz. Trois Coosemans, parmi lesquels <strong>de</strong>ux paysages <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> environs <strong>de</strong> Fontainebleau, égalenaent un peu secs, un peu trop écrits, mais d'une belle tonalité fouillée, <strong>et</strong> un troisième tableau, Parc <strong>de</strong> Tervueren, noyé dans -<strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> vapeurs où le soleil levant m<strong>et</strong> sa gran<strong>de</strong> tache rouge, morceau décoratif très-enlevé, avec <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> parties faibles. Deux Crépin dans <strong>la</strong> note habituelle ; puis encore <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>de</strong> Cock, le plus vert <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> peintres, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Den Duyts, trop facilement faits, sans solidité, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Goemans, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Hagemans, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> .Storm <strong>de</strong> Gravesan<strong>de</strong>, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Go<strong>et</strong>hals, <strong>de</strong>ux Hannon d'un accent mordant, l'un dans les verts <strong>de</strong> l'été, l'autre dans les b<strong>la</strong>ncs <strong>de</strong> l'hiver, avec <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> — finesses <strong>de</strong> plein air, une <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Huberti. tendres comme exécution poussée, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> pastels, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Lemayeur justes <strong>de</strong> ton, mais cotonneux, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> Montigny dans <strong>la</strong> brume, veloutés, profonds, d'une impression toujours sincère, un Berger <strong>de</strong> Raeymaekers, bonne silhou<strong>et</strong>te, tonalité discrète, facture souple ; une bonne étu<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> verdures dans <strong>la</strong> lumière, <strong>de</strong> Gaston Ragot; un Verger chau<strong>de</strong>ment éc<strong>la</strong>iré, <strong>de</strong> G. Speeckaert; un efl'<strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong> matin, <strong>de</strong> M. Tscharner ; une charmante indication dans <strong>la</strong> vapeur, <strong>de</strong> M. Van <strong>de</strong>r Hecht ; une figure en plein air, <strong>de</strong> M. Van Camp, dans <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> tons perlés ; enfin <strong>de</strong>ux toiles <strong>de</strong> .AI. Ter Lin<strong>de</strong>n, un talent très-afBrmé, celui-là, un très-remarquable peintre, qui, dans son Vieux jardin, rap^jelle Mill<strong>et</strong> <strong>et</strong> Descamps dans son Intérieur. Tel est le bi<strong>la</strong>n <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> paysagistes belges. Peu <strong>de</strong> paysagistes français. Je relève seulement les noms suivants : Emile Br<strong>et</strong>on, impression fraîche, Defaux, peinture lustrée , visant aux coqu<strong>et</strong>teries <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> pal<strong>et</strong>te, Rich<strong>et</strong>, tonalité chau<strong>de</strong>, vision <strong>de</strong> secon<strong>de</strong> main, Bel<strong>la</strong>ngé , Bandit, M'ie Courtiz, dont les grès, dans les Rochers <strong>de</strong> 1(1 Reine b<strong>la</strong>nche, rappellent les beaux tons ar- doisés <strong>de</strong> Courb<strong>et</strong>, Veyrassat avec une note c<strong>la</strong>ire, vibrante. M. Alfred Verwée est un bel animalier, d'une sauté toute f<strong>la</strong>man<strong>de</strong>. Sa Côte <strong>de</strong> Zé<strong>la</strong>n<strong>de</strong>, étoffée d'un corpulent cheval gris-pommelé, mêle à un ciel remuant, p<strong>la</strong>qué <strong>de</strong> jaune, <strong>de</strong> rouge <strong>et</strong> <strong>de</strong> viol<strong>et</strong>, <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> sables d'un jaune pâle où traînent <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> ombres bleues. C'est le contraire <strong>de</strong> l'art <strong>de</strong> M. Heymans: <strong>la</strong> lumière fait vibrer ici toutes les énergies <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong> pal<strong>et</strong>te, une furie <strong>de</strong> coloris étalé <strong>et</strong> fort. Même observation pour M'i" Venneman, très-nourrie dans ses tons, mais turbulente dans l'exécution. M. Alfred Hubert, au contraire, est le sang-froid même, dans ses tableaux d'une exécution trè-n<strong>et</strong>te un peu mince, couvrant juste assez <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> ossatures fouillées, un esprit <strong>de</strong> crayon toujours en éveil. Puis viennent les marinistes. M. Artan, un œil extrêmement sensible, rompu aux chatoiements <strong>de</strong> l'eau, très-bel ouvrier en outre, quoique inégal; M. Mesdag, brutal, attaquant <strong>la</strong> mer en marin, d'une sincérité rare; M. Bouvier, chez qui l'on est sûr <strong>de</strong> rencontrer <strong>de</strong> belles étu<strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>de</strong> ciel. Je signalerai en passant quelques bons intérieurs <strong>de</strong> MM. Hennebick, Mellery, B<strong>la</strong>nc-Garin, Van .Moer; une fort jolie vue <strong>de</strong> VÉgtise Sainte-Croix, par M. Alex. Marcelle, dans une pâte nacrée, g<strong>la</strong>cée d'ombre grise, d'une chaleai" <strong>de</strong> ton soutenue; le Pèlerinage, <strong>de</strong> M. Lhermitte, art sérieux, réfléchi, d'une conscience rare; les Satyres, <strong>de</strong> M. Priou, les envois <strong>de</strong> MM. Luminais, De<strong>la</strong>marre, Gilbert, Lefebvre, Lépaulle, Richter, Leleux, <strong>la</strong> plupart entrevus déjà au Salon; un Mont-<strong>de</strong>-Piété par M. Bokelmann, <strong>de</strong> Dusseldorf, étu<strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>de</strong> types réussis, dans un ensemble froid <strong>et</strong> vert, les portraits <strong>de</strong> MM. Cluysenïier, Charl<strong>et</strong>, C<strong>la</strong>us, ceux-ci d'une ferm<strong>et</strong>é, d'un accent qui prom<strong>et</strong>, une figure nue <strong>de</strong> M. Legendre, bien charpentée, un peu sommainement mo<strong>de</strong>lée toutefois; un Intérieur <strong>de</strong> M. Impens, où ondule un air gris, très-fin, <strong>et</strong> je m'arrêterai plus particulièrement à MM. Fantin- Latour, Lieberman <strong>et</strong> Feyen-Perrin. Ce <strong>de</strong>rnier expose une Parisienne à Cancale; c'est <strong>la</strong> même fill<strong>et</strong>te flu<strong>et</strong>te <strong>et</strong> éveillée, à <strong>la</strong> tête <strong>de</strong> moineau franc, que le peintre a déjà tracée; <strong>et</strong> naturellement le succès continue.
