snma une plante du nord. Comment s'expliquer cette con-
tradiction ? A quelle plante actuelle de Tlnde septentrionale
pourrait-on appliquer la description que l'on fait de la plante
védique du sacrifice? Le Çatapailui Braliinano, dit que la
plante du soma fut enlevée et apportée par un faucon; on
pourrait l'identifier avec VIndrahasio, Vlndrasurâ (vitex
negundo); mais on trouverait bien dans le negundo toutes
les qualités attribuées à la plante du soma védique. Quant
au soma employé actuellement dans l'Inde, les informations
que nous tirons du Classical Dictionary of India de Gar-
rett sont loin d'être satisfaisantes : « The soma of the Veda,
écrit Garrett, is no longer known in India. D»' Haug says
