16 ANSELM GERHARD scozzese fungeva inevitabilmente da oggetto d’identificazione, anche più di quanto avvenisse solitamente nella rappresentazione del dramma schilleriano. L’insistenza di <strong>Donizetti</strong> sui toni sentimentali, sulle sofferenze della sovrana prigioniera fu probabilmente decisiva ai fini della proibizione della partitura ad opera della casa reale borbonica – circa la quale si discute ancor oggi se provenisse dal re oppure piuttosto dalla regina –, tanto più che ne derivava un un colorito di estrema uniformità, criticato aspramente anche in occasione della prima milanese di oltre un anno dopo. In una recensione apparsa nel «Censore universale dei teatri», leggiamo: «Senza che nella successione delle scene vi sia mai un distacco, un contrasto di colori <strong>musica</strong>li […]; vi regn[a] in tutte un ostinatissimo piagnisteo». 11 Questo «piagnisteo», nel quale sarebbe dunque lecito sospettare una causa importante dello scarso successo dell’opera durante l’Ottocento, non fu dunque imputabile all’incapacità del compositore, ma senza dubbio a una sua precisa intenzione. Già Schiller aveva ribadito in una lettera a Goethe: Con l’elaborazione, incomincio ora a persuadermi sempre più della vera qualità tragica del mio soggetto; in ispecie perché fin dalle prime scene si vede incombente la tragedia e, mentre l’azione sembra dilungarsi dalla catastrofe, vi si è condotti più e più dappresso. Perciò non vi manca il timor d’Aristotele, ed anche la compassione vi trova luogo. <strong>La</strong> mia <strong>Maria</strong> non ecciterà teneri sentimenti, né tale è la mia mira; io voglio sempre considerarla qual creatura naturale, ed il patetico dev’esser più una profonda general commozione che non una particolar simpatia.
