SUMMARY
Volume LXV n. 1 – Gennaio-Marzo 2011
Over the last twenty-thirty years, Italy has experienced important changes in family
relationships, social behaviours and lifestyles that have profoundly changed the family
structure. This had been previously characterized by large families, with strong attachment
to motherhood and traditions. Now, for instance, we observe a loss in the centrality of
marriage, increase of informal cohabitation, delay in union formation, increase of
separation and divorces. The analysis of this work is entirely based on data from the Family
Multiscope Survey – Istat 2003 Family and Social Subject. The methodology used was the
Multiple Correspondence Analysis that emphasizes the most salient demographic features
of the Italian family today, besides, it attempts to highlight their most important needs, with
particular reference to urban context.
