ABSTRACT<br />

Participatory ma<strong>na</strong>gement has been object of study of several authors,<br />

entrepreneurs and consultants around the world, mainly after the 1980s. The<br />

changes currently taking place in the organizatio<strong>na</strong>l environment have led<br />

companies and individuals to reformulate their concepts of participation in decision<br />

making and the structuring of organizatio<strong>na</strong>l strategies that promote competitive<br />

advantage. In Brazil, one of the pioneers in the development and implementation<br />

of a participatory ma<strong>na</strong>gement model has beem Semco, which since the 1980s<br />

promotes real change in ma<strong>na</strong>gement, achieving significant results with regard to<br />

organizatio<strong>na</strong>l climate, profitability, business growth and <strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l and inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l<br />

recognition as a competitive company. This research was performed at Semco<br />

Equipment and describes the company’s history and its strategy of implementation<br />

of participatory ma<strong>na</strong>gement model. In order to give support to the research,<br />

testimonies of the principal actors who participated in this process were collected<br />

as well as the a<strong>na</strong>lysis of information and inter<strong>na</strong>l documents of the organization.<br />

Basead on the a<strong>na</strong>lysis of the statements, one can describe the important facts<br />

that characterize this model of ma<strong>na</strong>gement and identify the beliefs that are<br />

currently shared by the staff of Semco that is certainly already part of what we can<br />

call the company culture. Understanding this process can help people and<br />

organizations to reflect on the participatory ma<strong>na</strong>gement, promoting changes in<br />

the work environment, turming it into a place of satisfaction and not suffering.<br />
