Estaferramenta transformadora da qual já se prenunciava a importância desde antes de suaverdadeira consolidação enquanto invento útil.A INVENÇÃO DO AVIÃONo início do século XX, com a evolução dos motores de combustão interna àexplosão, foi criada uma fonte energética portátil e potente o suficiente para ser aplicadacom sucesso nas aeronaves. O trabalho de Santos-Dumont no desenvolvimento dadirigibilidade dos balões baseou-se no emprego desse tipo de motor e nodesenvolvimento dos comandos de vôo. (BARROS, 2006, p. 187).Ao instalar os novos motores em aeronaves desenvolvidas a partir dos jáconsolidados planadores, estavam criadas as condições necessárias para odesenvolvimento do vôo do avião. Conforme Lilienthal avalia, profeticamente, ascondições presentes no final do século XIX:Whilst the solution of the flight problem is, properly speaking, the domainof the scientifically educated and practical, experienced engineer, thewhole question is one which engages the attention of almost every otherprofession. Every one recognizes the extraordinary consequences whichwill attend the solution of the flight problem; every one is able to see dailyfrom the observations of flying creatures that practical flight is possible.On the other hand, no investigator has so far been found who can proveconclusively that there is no hope for the imitation of flight by man 6 .(LILIENTHAL, 1889, p.105).O historiador da Força Aérea Norte-Americana, Richard Hallion realiza umacomparação entre os dois inventos aeronáuticos, o balão e o avião, e sua relação com aciência e a tecnologia bastante fiel ao conteúdo histórico pesquisado:The balloon and the airplane constituted the two great machines of theatmospheric flight revolution. The balloon was the more “scientific” aswell as the simpler to achieve, and because it was easier, it appearedfirst. The airplane was more “technological” and difficult to accomplish,demanded a more interdisciplinary and industrial approach, and thus tookover a century longer. The balloon sprang from the seventeenth andeighteenth centuries, the product of Archimedes’ mechanics and Anglo-French chemistry (the ever more comprehensive understanding of thebehavior and extraction of gases).
