AbstractThe paper emphasizes a role of metadata in publishing and promoting electronic courses and theirparts. This role, in author’s opinion, is not appreciated in Polish e-learning environment. In the paperthe metadata categories, compliant with SCORM specification, are presented, as well as areas of theirimplementation and target groups. Latitude of defining some metadata, allowed by SCORM, can be indicatedas one of the sources of difficulties in importing courses and content exchange between differentLMS platforms. Metadata standard development is directed on more formal definition of content of somemetadata, which is “free” at the moment. Simultaneously, metadata content and fully defined metadatastructures are the base of effective e-learning content management. The content is stored in the e-contentrepositories, which can be accessed via metadata repositories. Electronic course or a unit not describedby metadata, cannot be seen in the web, which causes their “absence” in virtual world. The importanceof the problem was noticed in a new eContentPlus programme, which stimulates e-content enrichmentwith metadata. It favours content classification, accessibility, exchange possibilities and reusability, whichseem to be still difficult to achieve in Poland nowadays.!
