GOOD FORTUNE (mAhAmANSALA).i<br />
When Buddha w<strong>as</strong> residing in <strong>the</strong> Gridhrakuta Mountain,<br />
near Ksljagriha, preaching for <strong>the</strong> benefit of Dev<strong>as</strong> and<br />
men, <strong>the</strong>re w<strong>as</strong> residing on <strong>the</strong> banks of <strong>the</strong> Ganges a<br />
certain Brahmach§,rin, belonging to <strong>the</strong> Niifgrantha sect, of<br />
considerable age and v<strong>as</strong>t wisdom. This man, with his<br />
500 followers.^ devoted himself to <strong>the</strong> study of <strong>the</strong> stars<br />
and heavenly bodies, with a view to predict lucky and<br />
unlucky events. On one occ<strong>as</strong>ion, just before Buddha had<br />
commenced his public ministry, this man, with his , dis-<br />
ciples, were discussing <strong>the</strong> question of " good fortune," <strong>as</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>y sat by <strong>the</strong> river's side ; and after explaining in what<br />
good fortune consisted, so far <strong>as</strong> it concerned <strong>the</strong> happi-<br />
ness of a prince in his worldly empire, <strong>the</strong> question arose<br />
<strong>as</strong> to what "good fortune" w<strong>as</strong> when considered in refer-<br />
ence to <strong>the</strong> future. After much discussion, <strong>the</strong>y resolved<br />
to go to <strong>the</strong> Bodhi Tree, where <strong>the</strong> World-honoured had<br />
just overcome Mara, and put this question to him. What<br />
is <strong>the</strong> secret of real " good fortune " ? On which <strong>the</strong><br />
M<strong>as</strong>ter opened his mouth and repeated <strong>the</strong>se lines :<br />
" Buddha, <strong>the</strong> Honoured above all gods, Tath4-<br />
gata, <strong>the</strong> ever- wise and intelligent, is <strong>as</strong>ked by <strong>the</strong><br />
learned sages of <strong>the</strong> Brahmach^rin sect in what<br />
consists <strong>the</strong> enjoyment of good fortune. On this<br />
Buddha, <strong>the</strong> Qomp<strong>as</strong>sionate, for <strong>the</strong>ir sake enun-<br />
ciates true wisdom. He who h<strong>as</strong> faith, and de-<br />
