LINCOLN COUNTY is located in the southwestern part <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> (fig. 1). The<br />

counties bordering <strong>Lincoln</strong> <strong>County</strong> are Cabell and Putnam to the north, Kanawha to<br />

the northeast, Boone to the east, Logan and Mingo to the south, and Wayne to the<br />

west. <strong>Lincoln</strong> <strong>County</strong> has a total area <strong>of</strong> 281,000 acres, or about 439 square miles. In<br />

2000, the county had a population <strong>of</strong> 22,108 (U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Commerce 2002).<br />

The main enterprises in the county are timber production, natural gas and<br />

petroleum production, farming, and coal production. Mining and related industries,<br />

railroads, drilling, logging, and educational fields account for most <strong>of</strong> the employment<br />

in the county.<br />

This section describes the history<br />

and settlement, farming, transportation<br />

facilities, relief and drainage, natural<br />

resources, geology, and climate <strong>of</strong> the<br />

survey area.<br />

History and Settlement<br />

<strong>Lincoln</strong> <strong>County</strong> was established on<br />

February 23, 1867, by an act passed<br />

by the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Legislature<br />

(Lambert 1991). The county was<br />

formed from portions <strong>of</strong> Kanawha,<br />

Boone, Putnam, Cabell, Logan, and<br />

Wayne Counties. <strong>Lincoln</strong> was the<br />

53rd county formed <strong>of</strong> the present<br />
