CeF—Cedarcreek-Rock outcrop complex, very steep,<br />

extremely stony<br />

Setting<br />

Landscape position: Cedarcreek—on nearly level or gently sloping benches and very<br />

steep outslopes; Rock outcrop—nearly vertical highwalls; in areas that have been<br />

surface-mined for coal<br />

Note: The Cedarcreek soil and Rock outcrop occur as areas so intermingled and<br />

small that mapping them separately is impractical.<br />

Composition<br />

Cedarcreek and similar soils: 85 percent (60 percent outslopes and 25 percent<br />

benches)<br />

Rock outcrop and similar inclusions: 15 percent<br />

Typical Pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

Cedarcreek<br />

Surface layer:<br />

0 to 3 inches—brown very channery loam<br />

Substratum:<br />

3 to 65 inches—mixed yellowish brown and brownish yellow, mottled very channery<br />

loam<br />

Rock outcrop<br />

The Rock outcrop occurs as nearly vertical highwalls <strong>of</strong> exposed bedrock that rise<br />

25 to 100 feet above the bench floor.<br />

Cedarcreek<br />

Drainage class: Well drained<br />

Permeability: Moderate or moderately rapid<br />

Available water capacity: Low to high<br />

Depth to a seasonal high water table: More than 72 inches<br />

Flooding: None<br />

Shrink-swell potential: Low<br />

Hazard <strong>of</strong> erosion: Severe<br />

Slope class: Very steep<br />

Stoniness: 5 to 10 percent <strong>of</strong> the surface covered by stones<br />

Rockiness: About 15 percent rock outcrop<br />

Natural fertility: Low or medium<br />

Reaction: In unlimed areas, extremely acid to strongly acid throughout<br />

Organic matter content in the surface layer: Very low<br />

Surface run<strong>of</strong>f: Very low on the benches and very high on the outslopes<br />

Depth to bedrock: More than 60 inches<br />

Inclusions<br />

Limiting inclusions:<br />

<strong>Soil</strong>s that have more than 15 percent <strong>of</strong> their surface covered by stones and<br />

boulders<br />

<strong>Soil</strong>s that are less than 20 inches deep over bedrock<br />

Use and Management<br />

Uses: Open areas <strong>of</strong> this map unit support grasses, legumes, and autumn olive. The<br />

remaining acreage is used as woodland.<br />
