slopes; 1 mile north <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Route 46 on a ridge between Stonecoal Branch<br />

and Berry Branch <strong>of</strong> Mud River; <strong>US</strong>GS Mud topographic quadrangle; lat. 38 degrees<br />

06 minutes 36 seconds N. and long. 81 degrees 58 minutes 45 seconds W.<br />

Oi—0 to 2 inches; slightly decomposed leaf litter.<br />

Oe—2 to 3 inches; moderately decomposed leaf litter.<br />

A—3 to 5 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very<br />

friable; many fine, medium, and coarse roots; 2 percent shale fragments; strongly<br />

acid; clear smooth boundary.<br />

BA—5 to 10 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam; weak fine subangular<br />

blocky structure; friable; many fine roots; 5 percent shale fragments; strongly acid;<br />

gradual smooth boundary.<br />

Bt1—10 to 22 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) silty clay loam; moderate medium<br />

subangular blocky structure; firm; common distinct clay films on faces <strong>of</strong> peds;<br />

common fine roots; 5 percent shale fragments; very strongly acid; clear wavy<br />

boundary.<br />

Btg1—22 to 30 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) and yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silty clay<br />

loam; common medium prominent red (2.5YR 4/6) s<strong>of</strong>t masses <strong>of</strong> iron<br />

accumulation; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common<br />

distinct clay films on faces <strong>of</strong> peds; 2 percent shale fragments; very strongly acid;<br />

gradual smooth boundary.<br />

Btg2—30 to 37 inches; gray (10YR 6/1) and light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) silty clay<br />

loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; common distinct clay<br />

films on faces <strong>of</strong> peds; 2 percent shale fragments; very strongly acid; gradual<br />

smooth boundary.<br />

Cg—37 to 49 inches; light gray (10YR 7/1) and brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) silt loam;<br />

massive; friable; 5 percent shale fragments; very strongly acid; abrupt smooth<br />

boundary.<br />

Cr—49 to 55 inches; s<strong>of</strong>t interbedded gray shale and siltstone.<br />
