<strong>The</strong> model rarely <strong>in</strong>cludes all parts explicitly. Some<strong>times</strong>, the cause is not disclosed<br />

(Liv.9.14.8), some<strong>times</strong> the actual fortune or misfortune is miss<strong>in</strong>g (Pl.Ep.396-399,<br />

Ov.Ep.17.159, Ov.Met.5.546-550) and some<strong>times</strong> there is no action suggested (Cic.Phil.4.4.9).<br />

Omens <strong>in</strong> Roman culture are always related to the fortune or misfortune <strong>of</strong> the one it is perceived<br />

to be directed aga<strong>in</strong>st. <strong>The</strong>y are never about neutral or irrelevant th<strong>in</strong>gs, such as how many<br />

pigeons will be at the market next time, but always related to the concerns <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terpreter.<br />

Some<strong>times</strong> this is an <strong>in</strong>dividual, some<strong>times</strong> a group and some<strong>times</strong> the state. <strong>The</strong>y are conceived<br />

<strong>of</strong> as signs from the gods, and were <strong>in</strong>tegral parts <strong>of</strong> the most central narratives.<br />
