<strong>The</strong> Kalungi <strong>in</strong> West Africa have different specialists, whom they <strong>of</strong>ten employ to<br />

reveal hidden causes <strong>of</strong> people’s misfortune. <strong>The</strong>y are all considered reliable and<br />

have a good reputation.<br />

1) A parawa specialist communicates with Para, a god whom is some<strong>times</strong> given<br />

small <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> dried bread.<br />

2) An umbuwu specialist communicates with Umbo, a god whom is some<strong>times</strong><br />

given elaborate feasts <strong>of</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>est food.<br />

3) An olowo specialist communicates with Olo, a god whom is <strong>of</strong>fered a meal<br />

daily.<br />

A Kalungi man is try<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d out why his wife is barren, and what he has to do to<br />

get a child. Among the Kalungi children are very important, and barrenness is<br />

considered a great misfortune. Which <strong>of</strong> the specialists is it most probable he will<br />
