means signs obta<strong>in</strong>ed from the gods by request. I will call this impetrative <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>. This<br />

type corresponds to ritual <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se two types are the basis <strong>of</strong> the first dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong><br />

Now that we have specified what <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> does, we need to specify how this is achieved.<br />

Based on the ethnographical record, it is possible to dist<strong>in</strong>guish three major <strong>in</strong>terrelated<br />

elements <strong>in</strong> <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>: motivation, sign production and sign <strong>in</strong>terpretation. <strong>The</strong> motivation is<br />

what leads to a question posed by a questioner. Without a motivation to know someth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

sign production and sign <strong>in</strong>terpretation would not be relevant. <strong>The</strong> sign production is the<br />

process that leads to the sign, which is f<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>in</strong>terpreted. <strong>The</strong>re are differences between the<br />

two k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong>, not <strong>in</strong> the motivation or <strong>in</strong>terpretation, but <strong>in</strong> the sign production.<br />

Impetrative <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> always employs an operator and a technique, whereas oblative<br />

<strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> relies on a salient event. <strong>The</strong> outcome <strong>of</strong> both is a sign. This gives us a typology <strong>of</strong><br />

components <strong>in</strong> <strong>div<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> (see table 3.1.)<br />
