<strong>The</strong> questionnaire was followed by a section <strong>of</strong> questions aimed to asses how credible the<br />

participants themselves found different persons from their own culture (rang<strong>in</strong>g from a 6 th<br />

grader over an astrologist to a doctor).<br />

Design Action Type (Intentional vs. Ritualized) and Credibility (Action vs. Advice) were<br />

with<strong>in</strong> subject variables, while the different Sets were between subjects variables.<br />

Procedure <strong>The</strong> participants were given this questionnaire as part <strong>of</strong> their class. <strong>The</strong> sets<br />

were randomly assigned and a written <strong>in</strong>troduction was read by a research assistant. It<br />

expla<strong>in</strong>ed that this questionnaire was part <strong>of</strong> a study whose purpose it was to <strong>in</strong>vestigate<br />

<strong>in</strong>tercultural understand<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> participants were asked to put themselves <strong>in</strong> the situation <strong>of</strong><br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> character and answer the follow<strong>in</strong>g questions.<br />

Results To test for the effect <strong>of</strong> Set on the responses a one way ANOVA was conducted,<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g a significant difference only for the Kurabi story <strong>in</strong> the INT/ACC condition, F(3,43) =<br />

6.839, P
