245 CIL 3. 1008=ILS 2476, inscription, Apulum (Alba Iulia), Dacia,
2nd C.AD
Sacred to the Fortune of the Emperor and the Genius of the people of
the canabae, Lucius Silius Maximus, veteran of Legion I Adiutrix, Loyal
246 ILS 9106, inscription, Apulum, 2nd C.AD
To Marcus Ulpius Apollinaris, prefect of the camp of Legion XIII
Gemina, the councillors and Roman citizens dwelling in the canabae
of the same legion, (set this up) from public funds.
Inscriptions record decuriones of the canabae at Apulum and a guardian of the
temple of Roman citizens (CIL 3. 1093; 1100; 1158). The camp at Apulum
was the base of the Legion XIII Gemina which remained here from the conquest
to the withdrawal under Aurelian. After Hadrian’s reorganization of the province
Apulum was the headquarters of the governor of Upper Dacia, and after further
changes by Marcus Aurelius, it became the seat of the governor of the three
Dacias. The canabae developed to the south of the military establishment. In
Marcus Aurelius’ reign this settlement received municipal status (Municipium
Aurelium Apulense), and then colonial status perhaps under Commodus (CIL
3. 7773). It seems that Septimius Severus established a second municipium in
proximity to the colony, with which it coexisted.
Leontius, official of the inhabitants of the canabae, and Tuccius
Aelianus, aedile, bestowed this as a gift for the veterans and Roman
citizens dwelling in the canabae of Legion V Macedonica.
Canabae, and also a separate settlement, developed close to the base of Legion
V Macedonica on the south bank of the lower Danube, and the latter was
established as a municipium in the reign of Marcus Aurelius.
