Ornaments, reservist of the Emperor, decorated with a Gold Crown,<br />
centurion of the sixth cohort of vigiles, centurion of the Imperial<br />
messengers, centurion of the sixteenth urban cohort, centurion of the<br />
second praetorian cohort, trainer of the cavalry scouts, chief of the<br />
headquarters, [centurion ?] of Legion XIII Gemina from the post of<br />
trecenarius, [chief centurion] of Legion VI Victrix, decorated for his<br />
successful exploits against the Astures with Necklaces, Ornaments, and<br />
Armbands, tribune of the fifth cohort of vigiles, tribune of the twelfth<br />

Beginning his military career as an ordinary praetorian guardsman, Valens passed<br />
by way of a staff post, imperial reservist, and centurionates in the urban troops,<br />
to the post of chief centurion in a legion, after which he acquired equestrian<br />
rank, assuming eventually the important procuratorship of Lusitania.<br />
Trecenarius—the meaning is obscure; in the urban troops, perhaps the<br />
centurion in command of the speculatores, or possibly the title of the most<br />
senior centurion.<br />
