number of slaves. It is tempting to speculate that the men with <strong>Roman</strong> names<br />

who acted as witnesses were other veterans living in the vicinity, although only<br />

one (Gemellus) is designated as such. It remains obscure why in the first instance<br />

Castor left most of his property to two female ex-slaves, even though he had a<br />

kinsman.
