the Medes, in the [ _ _ _ ] year of his tribunician power, consul for the
third time, and Lucius Verus, Conqueror of the Armenians, Greatest
Conqueror of the Parthians, Conqueror of the Medes, in the twelfth (an
error) year of his tribunician power, consul for the third time, the veterans
and civilians dwelling in Rapidum built the wall from its foundations
with squared stones, at their own expense and entirely from their own
resources, that is of the veterans [and civilians] living within the same
wall, with the help and direction of Baius Pudens, [outstanding man],
procurator of the Emperors, excellent governor, who also [dedicated it].
This inscription from the west gate of the town is identical to one at the east
gate. Rapidum was established as an auxiliary fort by Hadrian in 122, and the
civilian settlement, which was built within a few feet of the southern wall of
the camp, and also approached close to the western wall (see Figure 5), was
itself protected by the construction of ramparts described in the inscription; it
acquired municipal status in the third century, before being destroyed c. 270;
after this only a part of the town was reoccupied (Laporte 1989).
