Gaius Remmius Rufus, son of Publius, was discharged from the<br />

praetorian guard of the divine Augustus, supervisor and [ _ _ _<br />

Titus Antistius Sabinus, of the tribe Stellatina, from Augusta Taurinorum<br />

(Turin), soldier for ten years in the first praetorian cohort, in the century<br />

To the spirits of the departed. Quintus Caetronius Passer, son of Quintus,<br />

of the tribe Poblilia, soldier in the third praetorian cohort for eighteen<br />

years, discharged under the two Gemini, (set this up) for himself and<br />

for Masuria Marcella, daughter of Marcus.<br />

I lived as I wished, properly, in poverty, and honourably. I cheated<br />

no one, and may that assist my shade.<br />

Frontage 111/3 feet, 1<strong>31</strong>/3 feet back (area attached to the tomb).<br />

<strong>The</strong> meaning of ‘Gemini’ is obscure; it may refer to the consuls of AD 29, but<br />

it has been suggested that the inscription dates from the late first century.<br />

61 ILS 9494=EJ 252, inscription, Ostia, early 1st C.AD<br />

[ _ _ _ ], soldier of the sixth praetorian cohort. <strong>The</strong> people of Ostia<br />

granted a place for his burial and decreed that he should be buried<br />

with a public funeral because he was killed while extinguishing a fire.<br />

Frontage 12 feet, 25 feet back (area attached to the tomb).<br />

62 CIL 6. 2558=ILS 2036, inscription, Rome, 1st C. AD<br />

Gaius Atilius Crescens, son of Gaius, of the tribe Romilia, served in<br />

Legion IV for nine years, transferred to the praetorian guard, fifth<br />

praetorian cohort, served three years.<br />

Crescens probably served in the IV Macedonica, which supported Vitellius in<br />

AD 69.
