Bananas (Bulk <strong>and</strong> Containerized Consignments)<br />

Bananas (Bulk <strong>and</strong> Containerized Consignments)<br />

Use these procedures to inspect the usual banana of commerce. Bananas,<br />

excluding plantains, entering temperate zones of the United States from the<br />

Western Hemisphere are a low risk pathway for host specific quarantine<br />

significant pests. The risk is slightly higher for tropical <strong>and</strong> subtropical area of<br />

the U.S.<br />

BANANAS: Inspect plantains, cooking bananas, <strong>and</strong> bananas which differ<br />

from the usual bananas of commerce for internal feeders (fruit flies).<br />

In taking action on hitchhikers, the APHIS identifier decides whether to treat<br />

the consignment.<br />

FOLLOW the current guidelines in <strong>Fresh</strong> <strong>Fruits</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Vegetables</strong> Admissible Under the Protocol of the<br />

National Agriculture Release Program (NARP)<br />

1. HOLD one compartment on the vessel<br />

2. INSPECT 10 boxes from each compartment 2<br />

3. SUBMIT all pest interceptions, including mealybugs, to<br />

the APHIS identifier for final action<br />

4. RELEASE if no pests are found<br />

1. SELECT 1 out of every 10 Bills of Lading 3<br />

2. HOLD the selected Bill(s) of Lading <strong>and</strong> inspect 10<br />

boxes from it<br />

3. SUBMIT all pest interceptions, including mealybugs, to<br />

the APHIS identifier for final action<br />

4. RELEASE if no pests are found<br />
