Cold Treated Commodities
Cold Treated Commodities
Cold treatment is performed on certain commodities from countries that are
approved for such treatment. Commodities are cold treated to kill internal
feeders, such as fruit flies. The inspection at the port of entry is designed to
monitor the effectiveness of the cold treatment.
If live target pests (those that cold treatment are supposed to kill) are found,
immediately contact APTL.
If live or dead fruit flies are found, or if any other live pests are detected,
complete the chart at the end of this section.
Some consignments may have been inspected by APHIS officers overseas as
part of a preclearance program. These officers would have inspected the
consignment for certain hitchhikers or other target pests. If the shipment was
not precleared, also inspect the treated product for hitchhikers, contaminants,
or other pests and diseases.
Verify, through documentation review and manual requirements, the
admissibility and preclearance status of the produce.
It is unnecessary to cut grapes from Argentina or Italy to verify the efficacy of
cold treatment since these are cold treated and then fumigated with methyl
bromide. In addition, grapes are not a preferred host for fruit flies of concern
in these two countries.
