Procedures<br />

Fragrant Pears from China<br />

Cartons in the consignment must bear a legible stamp that identifies each<br />

of the following:<br />

The fruit (Fragrant Pear)<br />

The packing house name or number<br />

The orchard number<br />

If quarantine significant pests are found, applicable treatment schedules<br />

apply. If no approved treatment schedule is available, the consignment<br />

must be destroyed or reexported.<br />

Directions for Sampling <strong>and</strong> Inspecting the Fruit<br />

1. Use the bill of lading as your sampling unit.<br />

2. Devan the entire container.<br />

3. Take r<strong>and</strong>om samples of 30 boxes from throughout the consignment.<br />

4. Select at least one box per grower/orchard.<br />

Examining Containers <strong>and</strong> Outsides of Fruit<br />

1. Empty each of the 30 boxes <strong>and</strong> look for insect pests, hitchhikers, <strong>and</strong><br />

contaminants.<br />

2. Examine every fruit.<br />

3. Look on the outsides of the fruit for evidence of diseases, pest<br />

infestation, <strong>and</strong> pest damage. Look for holes, punctures, frass, <strong>and</strong><br />

mite-webbing.<br />

Examining Inside of Fruit for Internal Pests<br />

1. Cut 150 individual fruit from those previously selected for visual<br />

inspection.<br />

2. Examine the insides of the fruit for pests (caterpillars, borers, <strong>and</strong><br />

maggots).<br />

Action to Take Based on the Results of Your Inspection If Pests Are<br />

Found<br />

GIVE the importer one of the following options:<br />

Have the pears treated (HOLD consignment <strong>and</strong> CONTACT a PPQ<br />

Officer through proper channels)<br />

Have the consignment reexported<br />

Have the consignment destroyed<br />
