Combat Command Carter 89<br />
<strong>the</strong> squadron commander disarmed, searched, and secured <strong>the</strong><br />
captive, who <strong>in</strong>dicated that a couple of his buddies were still <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> area. Leav<strong>in</strong>g his prisoner bound on <strong>the</strong> ground under <strong>the</strong><br />
watchful eye of a Cobra, Wilson flew <strong>in</strong> his OH-58C <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearest<br />
B Troop observation post <strong>to</strong> get some help <strong>to</strong> search <strong>the</strong> complex<br />
and recover <strong>the</strong> prisoner. Staff Sergeants Jimmy Burnett<br />
and Alv<strong>in</strong> Fugate were mann<strong>in</strong>g that OP with <strong>the</strong>ir vehicles<br />
and crews. <strong>The</strong>y pulled out of <strong>the</strong>ir position and followed <strong>the</strong><br />
commander, still <strong>in</strong> his helicopter, back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> village, where<br />
<strong>the</strong>y secured <strong>the</strong> prisoner and conducted a hasty search of <strong>the</strong><br />
surround<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>The</strong>y <strong>in</strong>vestigated each build<strong>in</strong>g, but<br />
were not able <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d any signs of additional soldiers. F<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />
Wilson figured <strong>the</strong>y had been <strong>the</strong>re long enough and loaded <strong>the</strong><br />
terrified Iraqi <strong>in</strong> a Bradley and headed back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e. 16<br />
At around 1300 hours, A Troop scouts reported see<strong>in</strong>g more<br />
activity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> village. Wilson decided <strong>to</strong> send ano<strong>the</strong>r team<br />
back <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn, this time led by his executive officer MAJ<br />
Wimbish. S<strong>in</strong>ce tracked vehicles were not supposed <strong>to</strong> be forward<br />
of <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e, as <strong>the</strong>y had been <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, he decided<br />
<strong>to</strong> use <strong>the</strong> squadron’s old UH-1 (Huey) <strong>to</strong> carry a fiveman<br />
patrol of A Troop scouts led by SSG Wehage. CPT<br />
Morrison, upon hear<strong>in</strong>g what was go<strong>in</strong>g on, volunteered <strong>to</strong> accompany<br />
MAJ Wimbish and help him out as needed. In addition,<br />
Wimbish had air support from an aerial scout-weapons<br />
team and both ground troops ready <strong>to</strong> launch forward if <strong>the</strong> patrol<br />
got <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> trouble. <strong>The</strong>y landed near <strong>the</strong> village and <strong>the</strong> patrol<br />
conducted a search of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs, tak<strong>in</strong>g about one hour.<br />
MAJ Wimbish, concerned that <strong>the</strong>y were tak<strong>in</strong>g so long, asked<br />
CPT Morrison <strong>to</strong> locate <strong>the</strong> team and pull <strong>the</strong>m out. A short<br />
while later <strong>the</strong> team returned <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> UH-1. While <strong>the</strong>y had<br />
found no Iraqis, <strong>the</strong>y did come away with some radios and documents<br />
<strong>in</strong> Arabic that later turned out <strong>to</strong> be items left beh<strong>in</strong>d by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Saudis when <strong>the</strong>y had evacuated <strong>the</strong>ir base. 17<br />
MG Rhame was furious when he heard what was go<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cavalry squadron’s sec<strong>to</strong>r. <strong>The</strong>y were supposed <strong>to</strong> be on<br />
<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e quietly observ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> border area and protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
corps and division logistics bases. Not only were <strong>the</strong>y out blow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
