Recovery 209<br />
glow<strong>in</strong>g reports on <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> American equipment. 13<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> recover<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> offensive, <strong>the</strong> squadron<br />
had two ma<strong>in</strong> operational missions <strong>to</strong> conduct. One was <strong>to</strong> locate<br />
serviceable Iraqi equipment with<strong>in</strong> an area assigned by <strong>the</strong><br />
division. Some of it, especially <strong>the</strong> Soviet-made equipment,<br />
would go back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States for study at schools or technical<br />
agencies. Some, especially tanks and <strong>in</strong>fantry fight<strong>in</strong>g vehicles,<br />
would f<strong>in</strong>d its way <strong>to</strong> headquarters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States<br />
<strong>to</strong> serve as war trophies. <strong>The</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der would be destroyed by<br />
<strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>to</strong> keep it from be<strong>in</strong>g recovered and reused by <strong>the</strong><br />
Iraqi Army after <strong>the</strong> American forces withdrew. In <strong>the</strong> course of<br />
this mission, <strong>the</strong> squadron cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d dead Iraqi soldiers<br />
near <strong>the</strong>ir weapons and vehicles. Whenever scouts discovered<br />
<strong>the</strong>se soldiers, <strong>the</strong>y called <strong>the</strong> command post so that <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />
graves registration troops could respond. 14<br />
<strong>The</strong> squadron located two vehicles that were eventually<br />
placed on display at Fort Riley, Kansas. Doug Morrison’s ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
crews discovered a T-72 tank that appeared <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong> excellent<br />
condition, although mechanically <strong>in</strong>operable. See<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
as a challenge, <strong>the</strong> mechanics unloaded all of <strong>the</strong> ammunition<br />
and began identify<strong>in</strong>g what <strong>the</strong>y needed <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong> tank back <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />
service. <strong>The</strong>y <strong>the</strong>n searched for o<strong>the</strong>r damaged Iraqi tanks and<br />
began remov<strong>in</strong>g parts (called “cannibaliz<strong>in</strong>g” <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
terms) that <strong>the</strong> chosen T-72 required. This res<strong>to</strong>ration project became<br />
a good source of diversion for <strong>the</strong> mechanics who used<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir American skills <strong>to</strong> place this Soviet-made tank back <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> operation.<br />
Soon <strong>the</strong>y were able <strong>to</strong> get it runn<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y found<br />
an undamaged BMP Infantry Assault Vehicle and cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>the</strong><br />
res<strong>to</strong>ration process. For <strong>the</strong> next two months <strong>the</strong> squadron<br />
dragged or hauled <strong>the</strong>se vehicles along each time <strong>the</strong>y changed<br />
locations. F<strong>in</strong>ally, back <strong>in</strong> Saudi Arabia, Headquarters Troop<br />
cleaned <strong>the</strong>m up and prepared <strong>the</strong>m for shipment back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
United States. Today, both vehicles are on display at Fort Riley. 15<br />
While some Iraqi equipment was sent back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> United<br />
States, most was destroyed and rendered unusable. <strong>The</strong> cavalry<br />
organized ad hoc search and destroy teams <strong>to</strong> support this<br />
corps-wide effort. Fly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir OH-58C scout helicopters, <strong>the</strong><br />
avia<strong>to</strong>rs located an abandoned tank, personnel carrier, or artillery<br />
piece. Once found <strong>the</strong> pilot landed <strong>the</strong> helicopter and <strong>the</strong>
