When out of contact with his senior headquarters, Wilson made<br />

<strong>the</strong> decision <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue his attack <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> Basra Highway,<br />

believ<strong>in</strong>g that his commander would support his <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>in</strong><br />

this confus<strong>in</strong>g situation. <strong>Squadron</strong> leaders, such as Mike Bills,<br />

Ken Pope, Chris Philbrick, Bill Wimbish, Doug Morrison, and<br />

John Burdan <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>to</strong> make decisions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence<br />

of detailed orders. <strong>The</strong>se leaders relied on <strong>the</strong>ir understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of what <strong>the</strong>ir commander wanted accomplished, ra<strong>the</strong>r than on<br />

more restrictive command and control. Focus<strong>in</strong>g on mission accomplishment,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y <strong>to</strong>ok risks that resulted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron’s<br />

success and a harrow<strong>in</strong>g night on <strong>the</strong> Basra Highway.
