<strong>The</strong>re was also a service station outside of Khobar that provided<br />

contract meals. <strong>The</strong> military had arranged with <strong>the</strong> contrac<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>to</strong> wash and prepare a number of HMMWVs for shipment.<br />

Each driver brought <strong>the</strong> vehicle <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> station and<br />

stripped it and <strong>the</strong>n helped <strong>the</strong>m wash it. <strong>The</strong> contrac<strong>to</strong>r provided<br />

meals <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> a fairly civilized way with tablecloths, silverware,<br />

glasses, and waiters. At night <strong>the</strong> contrac<strong>to</strong>r ran a<br />

disco and provided near beer. All ranks were welcomed at this<br />

service station.<br />

About ten m<strong>in</strong>utes from Khobar <strong>the</strong>re was a public beach.<br />

One day, Wilson and some of his officers drove <strong>the</strong>ir assigned<br />

Chevy Suburban out <strong>to</strong> spend a day of relaxation. Unfortunately,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y got <strong>the</strong> Chevy stuck and were unable <strong>to</strong> push it out<br />

of <strong>the</strong> sand. All had a good laugh as a local contrac<strong>to</strong>r rounded<br />

up a bulldozer <strong>to</strong> pull <strong>the</strong> squadron’s “staff” car out of <strong>the</strong> sand.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r beach was <strong>in</strong> operation down <strong>the</strong> coast at a place<br />

called Half-Moon Bay. It had orig<strong>in</strong>ally been leased by <strong>the</strong><br />

British and was still open for American use. Soldiers boarded a<br />

shuttle bus and found <strong>the</strong>mselves deposited at a very nice resort<br />

with, <strong>in</strong> addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> beach, pools, a movie <strong>the</strong>ater, bowl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

alley, and pool tables. As a concession <strong>to</strong> Saudi cus<strong>to</strong>ms,<br />

men and women, many from <strong>the</strong> corps and division staff, did<br />

not swim <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> soldiers watched <strong>the</strong> movie Look Who’s<br />

Talk<strong>in</strong>g 2 and snacked on free food and soft dr<strong>in</strong>ks.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> troops packed <strong>the</strong>ir gear and cleaned <strong>the</strong> billets, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had numerous brief<strong>in</strong>gs from <strong>the</strong> military police and cus<strong>to</strong>ms<br />

authorities. Wilson placed a troop commander <strong>in</strong> charge of each<br />

flight and ensured <strong>the</strong>y unders<strong>to</strong>od <strong>the</strong> rules. Troopers were<br />

forbidden <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g home any acquired weapons, optics, Iranian<br />

products, and of course, drugs. <strong>The</strong> word was that if any contraband<br />

were found <strong>in</strong> your unit dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>spection, it<br />

would go <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> list for <strong>the</strong> flight home. <strong>The</strong>re<br />

were also plenty of s<strong>to</strong>ries on how previous commands had<br />

tried <strong>to</strong> smuggle out weapons and equipment. <strong>The</strong>se s<strong>to</strong>ries<br />

came with accounts of <strong>the</strong> punishment, <strong>in</strong> addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> delay,<br />

that each soldier received.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> wait<strong>in</strong>g was over. <strong>The</strong> soldiers looked great as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y formed for one last <strong>in</strong>spection. All seemed lean, tan, and<br />

more mature and looked impressive <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pressed desert
