1 <strong>The</strong> Quarter Horse<br />

<strong>to</strong> 1990<br />

<strong>The</strong> military organization that arrived on <strong>the</strong><br />

Iraqi airfield that w<strong>in</strong>ter day was <strong>the</strong> heir <strong>to</strong><br />

over 135 years of American military tradition.<br />

Battle streamers on <strong>the</strong> squadron’s colors attested <strong>to</strong> participation<br />

<strong>in</strong> wars around <strong>the</strong> world. While <strong>the</strong> nature of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

conflicts ranged from <strong>in</strong>surgency operations aga<strong>in</strong>st lightly<br />

armed foes <strong>to</strong> combat aga<strong>in</strong>st sophisticated armored units, <strong>the</strong><br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle unify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>me throughout its his<strong>to</strong>ry was that <strong>the</strong><br />

squadron fought as a mounted force.<br />

While military purists might argue that this mounted heritage<br />

may somehow be traced <strong>to</strong> knights on medieval European<br />

battlefields, American cavalry units developed <strong>in</strong> response<br />

<strong>to</strong> a specific need: <strong>the</strong> rapid movement of troops <strong>to</strong><br />

protect settlers as <strong>the</strong>y migrated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> West. <strong>The</strong>ir Native<br />

American foe, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> swamps of Florida, <strong>the</strong> mid-cont<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

pla<strong>in</strong>s or <strong>the</strong> desert Southwest, moved with a speed and<br />

cunn<strong>in</strong>g that regular <strong>in</strong>fantry simply could not match. Far different<br />

from <strong>the</strong> European hussars and lancers, it was dragoonstyle<br />

cavalry that policed <strong>the</strong> West and fought <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> American<br />

Civil War. 1 By 1942 at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of World War II, <strong>the</strong> American<br />

cavalry had turned <strong>in</strong> its horses for a variety of light armored<br />

cars and jeeps. Its primary role was now reconnaissance,<br />

or f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> enemy, and provid<strong>in</strong>g security or early<br />

warn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> body. Because cavalry commanders were<br />

prone <strong>to</strong> act <strong>in</strong>dependently, senior officers often gave <strong>the</strong>m a<br />

third type of mission: economy of force. Re<strong>in</strong>forced with <strong>the</strong><br />

means of heavy combat such as tanks and artillery, cavalry<br />
