o<strong>the</strong>rs said a few last words with loved ones on <strong>the</strong> few phones<br />

available <strong>to</strong> call off-post. F<strong>in</strong>ally, he got through <strong>to</strong> his mom, and<br />

now faced a dilemma as she <strong>to</strong>ld him that his grandmo<strong>the</strong>r had<br />

died and that <strong>the</strong>y wanted him <strong>to</strong> come home. Torn between his<br />

family and his soldiers, <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>to</strong>r sergeant decided <strong>to</strong> stay with<br />

his troops, although 1SGT Colangelo offered <strong>to</strong> send him home<br />

for <strong>the</strong> funeral and let him catch up later. Ball believed his duty<br />

was <strong>to</strong> his soldiers and he did not want <strong>to</strong> let <strong>the</strong>m down at <strong>the</strong><br />

most important moment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir career. 18<br />

<strong>The</strong> soldiers boarded buses and rode over <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> aircraft<br />

hangers at Fort Riley’s airfield. <strong>The</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y waited <strong>in</strong> a reception<br />

area manned by volunteers from <strong>the</strong> Red Cross, Veterans of<br />

Foreign Wars, and members of <strong>the</strong> “Old Troopers,” such as retired<br />

LTG Richard Seitz and community leaders. Seitz was a<br />

prom<strong>in</strong>ent member of <strong>the</strong> retired military community and had<br />

led a bayonet charge dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Battle of <strong>the</strong> Bulge <strong>in</strong> 1945 and<br />

went on <strong>to</strong> serve <strong>in</strong> Korea and Vietnam. He had s<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>to</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong><br />

and motivate <strong>the</strong> young troopers. While <strong>the</strong>y waited until<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g ordered <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> departure airfield, some troopers passed<br />

<strong>the</strong> time talk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> families and girlfriends who came <strong>to</strong> wait<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir loved ones. O<strong>the</strong>rs just collapsed <strong>in</strong> a corner, try<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> get a little sleep. Just before he left headquarters, Morrison<br />

learned that he had promotion orders for one of his soldiers.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cold hangar with bags packed high and soldiers<br />

tired of hurry<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>to</strong> wait, Headquarters Troop had an impromptu<br />

promotion for one of <strong>the</strong>ir own. 19<br />

Next s<strong>to</strong>p was Forbes Field <strong>in</strong> Topeka, Kansas, about an<br />

hour east of Fort Riley. It was a quiet bus ride. In <strong>the</strong> dark most<br />

troopers were lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir thoughts or just tired, now caught up<br />

<strong>in</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g far larger than any of <strong>the</strong>m could control. <strong>The</strong>n, it<br />

was off <strong>the</strong> buses and <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> reception area for ano<strong>the</strong>r muster<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ally a brief<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> last check by cus<strong>to</strong>ms agents and<br />

<strong>the</strong> drug dogs. Just before <strong>the</strong>y boarded <strong>the</strong> aircraft, a snows<strong>to</strong>rm<br />

delayed <strong>the</strong> departure and everyone, aga<strong>in</strong>, found a<br />

place <strong>to</strong> relax. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y got clearance <strong>to</strong> fly and <strong>the</strong> tired,<br />

somewhat dazed soldiers formed up aga<strong>in</strong>. MAJ Burdan found<br />

himself remember<strong>in</strong>g his fa<strong>the</strong>r’s s<strong>to</strong>ries about depart<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

Forbes Field <strong>in</strong> 1952 dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Korea War, when he had been a
