more prisoners. Once back <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> perimeter, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

brought <strong>the</strong> wounded <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron aid station. In <strong>the</strong>ir urge<br />

<strong>to</strong> help, American soldiers emptied <strong>the</strong>ir vehicles of field rations<br />

and water, and exhausted most of <strong>the</strong>ir medical supplies<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Iraqi wounded. 61 Realiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> danger <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong> and<br />

because <strong>the</strong> operation was not yet over, squadron leaders<br />

stepped <strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p <strong>the</strong> troopers from giv<strong>in</strong>g away all of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>the</strong> danger of attack, many vehicles reduced <strong>the</strong>ir crew <strong>to</strong> only<br />

two combat crew members, as o<strong>the</strong>rs tried <strong>to</strong> help keep <strong>the</strong><br />

Iraqi wounded comfortable and alive. 62 Wilson’s troopers were<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g a risk, s<strong>in</strong>ce even a limited Iraqi probe would cause <strong>in</strong>tense<br />

<strong>The</strong>re were numerous examples of how <strong>the</strong> troopers sought<br />

<strong>to</strong> aid <strong>the</strong> Iraqis once <strong>the</strong>y s<strong>to</strong>pped fight<strong>in</strong>g. As <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g<br />

wounds, and a compound fracture when <strong>the</strong> tank was hit.<br />

He was <strong>in</strong> a state of shock as <strong>the</strong> A Troop lifesaver and <strong>the</strong><br />

medics got him stabilized. <strong>The</strong> transformation of <strong>the</strong> troop from<br />

soldiers <strong>in</strong>tent on kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> enemy <strong>to</strong> “Red Cross” workers<br />

was amaz<strong>in</strong>g. It was as if a switch had been thrown and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were now <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> help mode. 63<br />

Chapla<strong>in</strong> Lou Parker was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> perimeter that night and<br />

was able <strong>to</strong> take a little more detached view of <strong>the</strong> fight than<br />

He helped MAJ Hansen and his medical team provide care <strong>to</strong><br />

medics’ stress beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong> better of <strong>the</strong>m and he walked<br />
