Objective Norfolk 157<br />
tics area, with many cargo trucks, trailers, and fuel tankers full<br />
of petrol. 68<br />
While Pope’s command was cutt<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> Iraqi defenders,<br />
B Troop attacked with its three pla<strong>to</strong>ons on l<strong>in</strong>e. Second<br />
Lieutenant Thomas Karns’s pla<strong>to</strong>on attacked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south,<br />
2LT Blaise Liess’s command <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> center, and 2LT Lowndes,<br />
who had already attacked along with <strong>the</strong> command group that<br />
even<strong>in</strong>g, moved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> north and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed contact with A<br />
Troop. Mov<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> area <strong>the</strong>y had fought <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night<br />
before, Lowndes’s pla<strong>to</strong>on destroyed any Iraqi vehicles or soldiers<br />
that still had some fight left. 69 In addition, CW3 Waymire’s<br />
SWT from D Troop was support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> troop from its position<br />
on <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn flank of <strong>the</strong> troop.<br />
As Bills’s command crested a small ridgel<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong>y faced <strong>the</strong><br />
amaz<strong>in</strong>g sight of dozens of burn<strong>in</strong>g Iraqi vehicles, <strong>the</strong> results of<br />
<strong>the</strong> previous even<strong>in</strong>g’s fire-fight. As <strong>the</strong>y rolled <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iraqi logistics<br />
site, <strong>the</strong>y encountered numerous bunkers, dug-<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>fantry,<br />
and supply vehicles. By 0715 hours, <strong>the</strong> troop was at its limit of<br />
advance and prepared <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong> attack <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Kuwait. 70<br />
Wilson had followed A Troop while Burdan trailed B Troop.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> fight <strong>the</strong>y l<strong>in</strong>ked up and decided <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>spect <strong>the</strong><br />
area <strong>the</strong>y had just fought through dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> past few hours.<br />
<strong>The</strong> BMP that MAJ Burdan thought he had destroyed <strong>the</strong> night<br />
before turned out <strong>to</strong> be a T-55 tank; <strong>the</strong> Bradley’s 25 mm armor<br />
pierc<strong>in</strong>g round had gone right <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> its turret. O<strong>the</strong>r vehicles that<br />
B Troop had destroyed were still smok<strong>in</strong>g. While he was<br />
pull<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> area, Burdan confronted a hostile T-72 tank,<br />
<strong>in</strong> hull-defilade, at close range. <strong>The</strong> Iraqi tank commander<br />
dropped <strong>in</strong>side his turret and began travers<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Burdan’s direction.<br />
S<strong>to</strong>pp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> raise his turret’s missile launcher, SGT Carpenter<br />
fired a TOW at <strong>the</strong> target only 200 meters away. <strong>The</strong>y<br />
were <strong>to</strong>o close and <strong>the</strong> missile hit <strong>the</strong> ground, careen<strong>in</strong>g out of<br />
sight. Before <strong>the</strong> tank could return fire, Wilson, a little far<strong>the</strong>r<br />
away, shot ano<strong>the</strong>r missile, destroy<strong>in</strong>g it. <strong>The</strong>y were lucky; <strong>the</strong><br />
Bradley was simply not as effective as <strong>the</strong> tank <strong>in</strong> such a fight. 71<br />
By 0800 hours Wilson ended <strong>the</strong> attack and directed <strong>the</strong><br />
squadron <strong>to</strong> beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rearm and refuel operations. <strong>The</strong> Command<br />
Group pulled up <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r just below a ridgel<strong>in</strong>e look<strong>in</strong>g<br />
out <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> east. <strong>The</strong> air liaison officer’s vehicle had a shortwave
