172 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Safwan</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>gle with <strong>the</strong> smoky oil well fires <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g darkness.<br />

Wilson realized that <strong>the</strong> waves of Iraqi troops would soon<br />

overpower A Troop, and it was time, <strong>in</strong> good old-West cavalry<br />

style, <strong>to</strong> circle <strong>the</strong> wagons. He ordered CPT Mike Bills’s B Troop<br />

<strong>to</strong> move from its nor<strong>the</strong>rn screen l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>to</strong> form a defensive<br />

perimeter along with A Troop. His unit defended <strong>the</strong> western<br />

side of <strong>the</strong> highway while Pope’s troopers guarded <strong>the</strong> east. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> center, Wilson planned <strong>to</strong> assemble <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of his<br />

unit near <strong>the</strong> ever-grow<strong>in</strong>g Camp Favors. Bills got his troop on<br />

<strong>the</strong> move quickly and headed for its portion of <strong>the</strong> squadron’s<br />

perimeter. 32<br />

Wimbish and his vehicles arrived at Burdan’s location<br />

around 1730 hours. As <strong>the</strong>y moni<strong>to</strong>red <strong>the</strong> situation on <strong>the</strong><br />

highway, <strong>the</strong>y soon realized that <strong>the</strong>y would probably end up<br />

stranded outside of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> perimeter on <strong>the</strong> road. <strong>The</strong>y could<br />

not move <strong>the</strong> two almost out-of-fuel helicopters until dawn and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y could not abandon <strong>the</strong>m without good reason. In addition,<br />

this was a good location <strong>to</strong> allow <strong>the</strong> cavalry squadron, which<br />

had been out of contact for over two hours, <strong>to</strong> set up a more<br />

powerful antenna and rega<strong>in</strong> contact with <strong>the</strong> 2nd Brigade. Regretfully,<br />

Wimbish <strong>the</strong>refore established his small command<br />

post, deep <strong>in</strong> enemy terri<strong>to</strong>ry, with little tactical security o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than one Bradley Fight<strong>in</strong>g Vehicle. <strong>The</strong> headquarters’s soldiers<br />

began digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> for what could be a harrow<strong>in</strong>g night. As B<br />

Troop arrived at <strong>the</strong> highway <strong>the</strong>y found A Troop fight<strong>in</strong>g vehicles<br />

and Iraqi soldiers located <strong>in</strong> a pump house <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> south<br />

and <strong>in</strong> a collection of several warehouses <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> north. B Troop<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok up its <strong>in</strong>itial positions on <strong>the</strong> west side of <strong>the</strong> highway and<br />

A Troop <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>the</strong> east side. 33<br />

Wilson called his two troop commanders <strong>to</strong> his location on<br />

<strong>the</strong> highway <strong>to</strong> discuss <strong>the</strong> situation. <strong>The</strong> two young capta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

drove up and jumped off <strong>the</strong>ir vehicles and climbed on<strong>to</strong> his. It<br />

was eerie even<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> sun was sett<strong>in</strong>g, vehicles were explod<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and burn<strong>in</strong>g, and a fire-fight raged all around <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> three<br />

discussed what had occurred and what <strong>the</strong>y were go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> do.<br />

Wilson’s decision was <strong>to</strong> keep <strong>the</strong> squadron on <strong>the</strong> highway<br />

and <strong>in</strong> its immediate vic<strong>in</strong>ity while <strong>the</strong>y awaited <strong>the</strong> arrival of<br />

<strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> division. <strong>The</strong>y would establish a perimeter with<br />

A Troop occupy<strong>in</strong>g from 12-6 and B Troop from 6 <strong>to</strong> 12. <strong>The</strong>
