an outpost near a collection of huts along <strong>the</strong> border called As<br />
Samah. Allegedly, Iraqi troops had attacked <strong>the</strong>m and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
headquarters ordered <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> fall back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> American l<strong>in</strong>es,<br />
leav<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d radios and personal equipment. Tak<strong>in</strong>g no<br />
chances, Pope’s troopers disarmed <strong>the</strong>m and asked for <strong>in</strong>structions.<br />
Meanwhile, now under guard, <strong>the</strong> Arab soldiers lay<br />
down for <strong>the</strong> night. <strong>The</strong> next morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> word came that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
were <strong>in</strong>deed Saudis and that <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>to</strong> be released at once.<br />
<strong>The</strong> squadron’s shift officers apologized profusely and <strong>the</strong>n<br />
sent <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong>ir way. 16<br />
A few hours later, four Iraqi soldiers wandered across <strong>the</strong><br />
border and <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> B Troop’s sights. After a scout section fired a<br />
few rounds of mach<strong>in</strong>e-gun fire <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir direction <strong>the</strong>y s<strong>to</strong>pped,<br />
raised <strong>the</strong>ir hands, and waved a white flag at <strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Bradley. While <strong>the</strong>y claimed <strong>to</strong> be desert<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y had weapons<br />
with <strong>the</strong>m and had buried several hand grenades before <strong>the</strong><br />
Americans arrived. So, <strong>the</strong> squadron’s officers did not accept<br />
<strong>the</strong> Iraqi explanation and suspected that this was a long-range<br />
patrol sent south <strong>to</strong> discover what was on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong><br />
border. Aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re were some <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g moments as <strong>the</strong> division<br />
and corps figured out how <strong>to</strong> process prisoners, obviously<br />
a task <strong>the</strong> senior headquarters had not planned on perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />
so early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> deployment. 17<br />
With dawn, th<strong>in</strong>gs quieted down, but that night at around<br />
1830 hours <strong>the</strong> activity along <strong>the</strong> border resumed. A ground<br />
surveillance radar squad identified vehicles mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong><br />
screen l<strong>in</strong>e. Tak<strong>in</strong>g no chances, Rhame ordered <strong>the</strong> aviation<br />
brigade <strong>to</strong> deploy Apaches <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1-4 <strong>Cavalry</strong>’s sec<strong>to</strong>r. At 2045<br />
hours, after a brief<strong>in</strong>g by Wilson, LTC Ralph Hayles led a team<br />
from his battalion on a sweep forward of <strong>the</strong> cavalry screen<br />
l<strong>in</strong>e. 18 As Hayles and his w<strong>in</strong>gman flew near CPT Bills’s sec<strong>to</strong>r<br />
and prepared <strong>to</strong> return south of <strong>the</strong> squadron, <strong>the</strong>y received<br />
radar warn<strong>in</strong>g signals from <strong>the</strong>ir on-board sensors that <strong>the</strong>re<br />
were anti-aircraft systems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity. He reported <strong>the</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ates<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron command post and requested permission<br />
<strong>to</strong> engage. Wilson, moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g events <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> TOC, denied<br />
his request and asked both ground troops <strong>to</strong> confirm <strong>the</strong>ir outpost<br />
locations. He ordered Hayles <strong>to</strong> take up positions beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />
Mike Bills’s M3A2. Hover<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d Bills, Hayles soon re-
