members performed rout<strong>in</strong>e ma<strong>in</strong>tenance on <strong>the</strong>ir helicopters<br />

with <strong>the</strong> help of <strong>the</strong> brigade’s aviation mechanics, conducted<br />

crew tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and slept on cots <strong>in</strong>side tents. 25<br />

While on <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e, ano<strong>the</strong>r field-grade officer arrived<br />

<strong>to</strong> augment <strong>the</strong> squadron. <strong>The</strong>re were excess officers throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> U.S. Army <strong>in</strong> Southwest Asia. <strong>The</strong> squadron headquarters<br />

was authorized two majors, but had three for most of Operation<br />

Desert S<strong>to</strong>rm. Large command posts, such as for a<br />

division, could have a field-grade excess of twenty or thirty<br />

percent. MAJ John S. D<strong>in</strong>nell, a West Po<strong>in</strong>t classmate of John<br />

Burdan, jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> squadron and went <strong>to</strong> work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> command<br />

post. Capta<strong>in</strong>s Tedesco and Sauer immediately began jok<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about each hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own field grade <strong>to</strong> supervise <strong>the</strong>m. Of<br />

course, as soon as D<strong>in</strong>nell arrived, <strong>the</strong> division pulled him<br />

away and directed him <strong>to</strong> conduct an <strong>in</strong>vestigation on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cident<br />

at As Samah, so he was unavailable for o<strong>the</strong>r duties. 26<br />

About mid-afternoon on February 17, <strong>the</strong> squadron scrambled<br />

for cover when a field artillery target acquisition battery<br />

detected Iraqi mortars fir<strong>in</strong>g from positions just north of B<br />

Troop’s screen l<strong>in</strong>e. CPT Tedesco <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron TOC notified<br />

<strong>the</strong> troop, which sent a scout section <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigate. <strong>The</strong> section,<br />

led by SSG Alv<strong>in</strong> Fugate, discovered two Soviet-made BRDM<br />

scout cars and engaged <strong>the</strong>m with TOW missiles, but missed<br />

when <strong>the</strong> vehicles retired on <strong>the</strong> far side of a ridge. CPT Mike<br />

Bills, on his way back from <strong>the</strong> squadron TOC when <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

alert arrived, sent out a second patrol, which he essentially<br />

led, supported by an aerial scout-weapons team. <strong>The</strong>y found<br />

trash at <strong>the</strong> location identified by <strong>the</strong> radar but not much else. 27<br />

This <strong>in</strong>cident had several important results. It gave <strong>the</strong><br />

ground and air teams ano<strong>the</strong>r opportunity <strong>to</strong> practice <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

It was also a drill that allowed <strong>the</strong> squadron command post <strong>to</strong><br />

react <strong>to</strong> a chang<strong>in</strong>g situation and assist <strong>in</strong> actually command<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> squadron. F<strong>in</strong>ally, it was ano<strong>the</strong>r exercise that helped <strong>to</strong> season<br />

its leaders at all levels. As an example, after <strong>the</strong> patrol returned,<br />

its pla<strong>to</strong>on leader 2LT Tom Karns approached his commander<br />

and <strong>to</strong>ld CPT Bills it was his job <strong>to</strong> run his pla<strong>to</strong>on, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> troop commander was out of l<strong>in</strong>e tak<strong>in</strong>g charge unless he<br />

really had <strong>to</strong>. Bills realized that his young pla<strong>to</strong>on leader was<br />

correct. Like all leaders, it was difficult for him <strong>to</strong> stand back
