110 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Safwan</strong><br />

ered a crack <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hull of its M3A2 Bradley. It was quite severe<br />

and extended from <strong>the</strong> right rear all <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> left front. In<br />

no time, squadron and direct-support ma<strong>in</strong>tenance crews were<br />

jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discussion. <strong>The</strong>re was not much a tactical unit<br />

could do <strong>to</strong> solve this k<strong>in</strong>d of a problem, s<strong>in</strong>ce it requires a fac<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

rebuild<strong>in</strong>g, so <strong>the</strong> division sent one of its “float” or extra<br />

Bradleys forward as a direct exchange. This vehicle turned out<br />

<strong>to</strong> be a M2A2, <strong>the</strong> improved <strong>in</strong>fantry version of <strong>the</strong> Bradley that<br />

had more room for an <strong>in</strong>fantry squad and fewer s<strong>to</strong>rage racks<br />

for <strong>the</strong> TOW missiles. Us<strong>in</strong>g this extra space, CPT Bills decided<br />

<strong>to</strong> assign his St<strong>in</strong>ger air defense team <strong>to</strong> Danussi. 12<br />

Iraq had a record of us<strong>in</strong>g chemical munitions and was suspected<br />

of experiment<strong>in</strong>g with biological ones. As a result, <strong>the</strong><br />

army tried <strong>to</strong> protect its soldiers from <strong>the</strong>se terrify<strong>in</strong>g weapons<br />

as best it could. Everyone had a protective mask and chemical<br />

protective suits. Vehicles had chemical alarms and all soldiers<br />

were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>to</strong> react <strong>to</strong> a chemical attack. In case of nerve agent<br />

contam<strong>in</strong>ation, soldiers had atrop<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>jec<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> counter its effect.<br />

In advance, <strong>the</strong>y were supposed <strong>to</strong> take “PB” pills that contributed<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> effectiveness of <strong>the</strong> atrop<strong>in</strong>e. 13<br />

Biological agents require different k<strong>in</strong>ds of protection and<br />

one of <strong>the</strong> most effective is vacc<strong>in</strong>ation. In preparation for <strong>the</strong><br />

advance, <strong>the</strong> medics began giv<strong>in</strong>g shots that were designed <strong>to</strong><br />

ward off botulism. Although <strong>the</strong> Food and Drug Adm<strong>in</strong>istration<br />

had not approved <strong>the</strong> vacc<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> army’s leadership felt it<br />

was safe <strong>to</strong> provide it <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> troops <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field. Not everyone<br />

shared that confidence and one of <strong>the</strong> squadron’s avia<strong>to</strong>rs refused<br />

<strong>to</strong> take it. LTC Wilson and o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> of command<br />

counseled <strong>the</strong> avia<strong>to</strong>r, but <strong>to</strong> no avail. Wilson had little<br />

choice but <strong>to</strong> ground him. O<strong>the</strong>r than this one case, everyone<br />

else grudg<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>to</strong>ok his medic<strong>in</strong>e and completed <strong>the</strong>ir preparation<br />

for combat. 14<br />

Chapla<strong>in</strong> Lou Parker visited <strong>the</strong> crews as <strong>the</strong>y prepared for<br />

battle. An army chapla<strong>in</strong> is not only a religious leader, but often<br />

acts as <strong>the</strong> soldier’s counselor and advisor. As he circulated<br />

among <strong>the</strong> crews, some broke away from <strong>the</strong>ir daily activities<br />

<strong>to</strong> spend a few m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>in</strong> prayer or conversation with Parker.<br />

At each s<strong>to</strong>p <strong>the</strong> soldiers quietly talked about <strong>the</strong>ir fears and<br />

worries, <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d that have always bo<strong>the</strong>red young men on <strong>the</strong>
