At CP India <strong>the</strong> squadron set up a modified medical clear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

station <strong>to</strong> help treat people. In some cases <strong>the</strong>y arranged for <strong>the</strong><br />

evacuation of badly <strong>in</strong>jured children, always with one of <strong>the</strong><br />

parents <strong>to</strong> ensure that <strong>the</strong> child was not lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> system.<br />

In cases where <strong>the</strong> child was evacuated without a parent,<br />

<strong>the</strong> parents wanted <strong>to</strong> know when <strong>the</strong>ir child was com<strong>in</strong>g back<br />

and <strong>the</strong> squadron referred <strong>the</strong>ir questions back up <strong>the</strong> medical<br />

channel. Unfortunately, <strong>in</strong> many cases, <strong>the</strong> medics received no<br />

answers back. Wilson, Burdan and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r officers still wonder<br />

how many of those parents ever saw <strong>the</strong>ir children aga<strong>in</strong>.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> squadron departed later <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> month, it could only<br />

have gotten worse as <strong>the</strong>re was no one left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area for <strong>the</strong><br />

families <strong>to</strong> talk <strong>to</strong>. Certa<strong>in</strong>ly treatment of refugee and civilian<br />

casualties was someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> army could have done better <strong>in</strong><br />

this conflict. 21<br />

Of course, <strong>the</strong> plight of <strong>the</strong> families sickened <strong>the</strong> squadron,<br />

as it did all <strong>the</strong> Americans strung out along <strong>the</strong> demarcation<br />

stepp<strong>in</strong>g on or kick<strong>in</strong>g a m<strong>in</strong>e while play<strong>in</strong>g soccer or <strong>the</strong> small<br />

children badly burned because <strong>the</strong>ir gas s<strong>to</strong>ve had been hit by<br />

some k<strong>in</strong>d of weapons fire and exploded were sights that most<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se veterans were unprepared for. 22<br />

On most nights soldiers could hear rifle and mach<strong>in</strong>e-gun<br />

fire com<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> local <strong>to</strong>wns. Refugees and local citizens<br />

recounted s<strong>to</strong>ries of Husse<strong>in</strong>’s police force establish<strong>in</strong>g control<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wns at night by arrest<strong>in</strong>g known and suspected dissidents<br />

and shoot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> streets of <strong>the</strong>ir neighborhoods.<br />

Corps-level situation reports are full of blood-curdl<strong>in</strong>g tales of<br />

terror, destruction, revenge, and murder. In general, <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> squadron could do except report <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

up <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>. On occasion, however, th<strong>in</strong>gs would spill across<br />

<strong>the</strong> MDL. On <strong>the</strong> last night of CP India’s nightly operation, a car<br />

with a family <strong>in</strong>side drove <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> checkpo<strong>in</strong>t. <strong>The</strong>y were frantic<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y described <strong>the</strong> Iraqi Secret Police who were right beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

and probably go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> execute <strong>the</strong>m when caught. <strong>The</strong>n<br />

<strong>the</strong> family saw a car approach<strong>in</strong>g and screamed (<strong>in</strong> Arabic) and<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted, “That’s <strong>the</strong>m!” O<strong>the</strong>r refugees jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>, confirm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that <strong>the</strong> occupants of <strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g car were some k<strong>in</strong>d of execution<br />

squad. Figur<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrong place, <strong>the</strong>
