erally try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> escape north, <strong>the</strong> Iraqi troops were gone. Noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way of <strong>the</strong> squadron’s advance. 18<br />
As Wilson’s troops cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> race across north-central<br />
Kuwait <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> late afternoon, <strong>the</strong>y could see low-ly<strong>in</strong>g dark<br />
clouds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> east, <strong>the</strong> result of Saddam Husse<strong>in</strong> ignit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Kuwait’s oil fields. <strong>The</strong> squadron’s speed of advance was very<br />
quick, mov<strong>in</strong>g as a s<strong>in</strong>gle unit, advanc<strong>in</strong>g across <strong>the</strong> desert almost<br />
<strong>in</strong> column with its helicopters forward conduct<strong>in</strong>g a zone<br />
reconnaissance. At around 1500, with its objective nearly <strong>in</strong><br />
sight, <strong>the</strong> squadron began <strong>to</strong> lose radio contact with <strong>the</strong> division’s<br />
tactical command post. 19<br />
Given <strong>the</strong> hilly terra<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong> speed that <strong>the</strong> squadron was<br />
mov<strong>in</strong>g, it was normal for communications <strong>to</strong> become <strong>in</strong>termittent.<br />
In addition, for most of <strong>the</strong> advance, <strong>the</strong> headquarters’s radio<br />
opera<strong>to</strong>rs could hear radio messages over <strong>the</strong> division command<br />
frequency, not suspect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y were actually los<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
ability <strong>to</strong> communicate <strong>the</strong>mselves. Once <strong>the</strong>y realized that<br />
<strong>the</strong>y had <strong>in</strong>deed lost contact with division, MAJ Wimbish had<br />
<strong>the</strong> squadron command post report <strong>the</strong>ir situation through <strong>the</strong><br />
2nd Brigade’s command post, which was closer. However, no<br />
one at 2nd Brigade <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> division’s problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Valley of <strong>the</strong> Boogers, or called <strong>the</strong> squadron and <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong><br />
s<strong>to</strong>p or slow down. Experienc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>termittent contact with his<br />
commander, MAJ Bill Wimbish, <strong>the</strong> executive officer, decided<br />
<strong>to</strong> move <strong>the</strong> squadron’s tactical operations center, consist<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
several command post vehicles, various support trucks, and a<br />
lone Bradley Fight<strong>in</strong>g Vehicle for security, <strong>to</strong>ward Wilson’s location.<br />
It left <strong>the</strong> 2nd Brigade area where it had been operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and headed out along <strong>the</strong> route taken by B Troop. On <strong>the</strong> way,<br />
it by-passed numerous bunkers and <strong>in</strong>fantry positions, captured<br />
three enemy tanks obviously no longer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fight, and<br />
disarmed n<strong>in</strong>ety-three Iraqi soldiers. 20 On a slightly different<br />
route, CPT Morrison moved his forward support element, consist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of a small command post, medical teams, ammunition<br />
vehicles, fuel vehicles, and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance crews, <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong><br />
squadron. Fortunately, without any fight<strong>in</strong>g power o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
his soldiers’ small arms, he had few <strong>in</strong>cidents until his arrival at<br />
<strong>the</strong> Basra Highway. 21<br />
Soon <strong>the</strong> cavalry began los<strong>in</strong>g communications with <strong>the</strong>
