isolated Iraqi positions from each o<strong>the</strong>r. 21<br />

As <strong>the</strong> lead elements approached <strong>the</strong> trenches, <strong>the</strong> Iraqis<br />

could see that many of <strong>the</strong> tanks pushed plows and m<strong>in</strong>e rollers<br />

<strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong>m. Combat eng<strong>in</strong>eer vehicles with <strong>the</strong>ir short but<br />

lethal 165-mm guns and plows, and <strong>the</strong> new armored combat<br />

earthmovers, called ACEs, also headed for trenches and<br />

bunkers. Beh<strong>in</strong>d this 6,000-meter-wide wall of iron came <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der<br />

of <strong>the</strong> battalions, especially <strong>the</strong> Bradley Infantry Fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Vehicles, with soldiers ready <strong>to</strong> fire from <strong>the</strong> ports on <strong>the</strong><br />

side and rear. In <strong>the</strong> turrets, <strong>the</strong> gunners prepared <strong>to</strong> engage<br />

with 7.62-mm coaxial mach<strong>in</strong>e guns and 25-mm Bushmaster<br />

au<strong>to</strong>matic cannon. Five hundred meters south of <strong>the</strong> enemy<br />

trench l<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> assault<strong>in</strong>g task forces dropped <strong>the</strong>ir plows from<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir carry position. <strong>The</strong>y cont<strong>in</strong>ued north at fifteen kilometers<br />

per hour, fir<strong>in</strong>g coaxial mach<strong>in</strong>e guns and 120-mm cannon <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> trenches. Trail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> four lead maneuver and two eng<strong>in</strong>eer<br />

task forces were <strong>the</strong> three exploit<strong>in</strong>g units: <strong>1st</strong> <strong>Squadron</strong>, <strong>4th</strong><br />

<strong>Cavalry</strong>, and <strong>1st</strong> Battalion, 3<strong>4th</strong> Armor, from <strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade and<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>4th</strong> Battalion, 37th Armor from <strong>the</strong> 2nd. 22<br />

Although enemy resistance was generally limited <strong>to</strong> uncoord<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

small-arms, rifle propelled grenades (RPG), artillery<br />

and mortar fire, <strong>the</strong> Iraqis did not simply quit. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade<br />

sec<strong>to</strong>r, LTC Gregory Fontenot, <strong>the</strong> 2nd Battalion, 3<strong>4th</strong> Armor<br />

task force commander, and one of his teams were forced off a<br />

low ridge by Iraqi artillery. <strong>The</strong> 5th Battalion, 16th Infantry task<br />

force <strong>to</strong>ok fire from an Iraqi pla<strong>to</strong>on and used concentrated<br />

coaxial mach<strong>in</strong>e gun and Bushmaster fire <strong>to</strong> capture <strong>the</strong> position<br />

and its twenty-five survivors. In <strong>the</strong> eastern part of <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r,<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2nd Brigade’s movement went faster and met little opposition.<br />

Iraqi soldiers cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> fight from <strong>the</strong>ir trenches and<br />

bunkers, obviously expect<strong>in</strong>g a friendly counterattack <strong>to</strong> drive<br />

<strong>the</strong> attackers off. Mounted fire from approach<strong>in</strong>g American armored<br />

vehicles was not enough <strong>to</strong> defeat <strong>the</strong> defend<strong>in</strong>g Iraqis. 23<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> attack<strong>in</strong>g battalions reached <strong>the</strong> trench l<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Iraqis probably anticipated dismounted American soldiers<br />

assault<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir ground positions, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Infantry Division<br />

commanders had no <strong>in</strong>tention of play<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> Iraqi rules.<br />
