<strong>the</strong> breach, <strong>the</strong> battle at Norfolk, <strong>the</strong> Basra <strong>Road</strong> and<br />

<strong>Safwan</strong> were all memories that would stay with <strong>the</strong>se young<br />

men as long as <strong>the</strong>y lived. As Oliver Wendell Holmes’s 1884<br />

Memorial Day speech given <strong>to</strong> fellow Civil War veterans, and<br />

played aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> a new generation of soldiers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ken Burns’<br />

documentary play<strong>in</strong>g on television dur<strong>in</strong>g Desert S<strong>to</strong>rm<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted out:<br />

We have shared <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>communicable experience of war.<br />

We have felt, we still feel, <strong>the</strong> passion of life <strong>to</strong> its <strong>to</strong>p.<br />
