164 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Safwan</strong><br />

lier <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong>y worked <strong>to</strong> repair vehicles and return<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir unit. At approximately 1300 hours <strong>the</strong>y moved<br />

through an Iraqi position that <strong>the</strong>y orig<strong>in</strong>ally thought was unoccupied.<br />

However, as <strong>the</strong>y drove through it, several Iraqis<br />

came out <strong>to</strong> surrender. Harmon halted his unit and searched<br />

<strong>the</strong> soldiers <strong>to</strong> take away <strong>the</strong>ir weapons. In <strong>the</strong> course of search<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> bunkers <strong>the</strong>y ran across several wounded Iraqis. MAJ<br />

Roger Hanson, <strong>the</strong> squadron surgeon, and 2LT Nathan Butler,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Medical Pla<strong>to</strong>on Leader, with <strong>the</strong> help of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r medics<br />

travel<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>s, treated <strong>the</strong> wounded. CPT Harmon<br />

flagged down some pass<strong>in</strong>g ground ambulances from 4-5 Artillery<br />

and directed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bunkers. <strong>The</strong>y loaded <strong>the</strong><br />

wounded Iraqi soldiers and evacuated <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rear. <strong>The</strong><br />

combat tra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong>n cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> east follow<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

ground troops. 13<br />

Franks expected Rhame’s armor <strong>to</strong> be on <strong>the</strong> objective by<br />

nightfall. With <strong>the</strong> highway cut from <strong>the</strong> south, <strong>the</strong> corps commander<br />

would have <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn portion of his double envelopment<br />

complete and be well on <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> destroy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Republican Guards units located far<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> north.<br />

Rhame promised Franks <strong>in</strong> a transmission over <strong>the</strong> division<br />

command net that he would reach Denver before <strong>the</strong> day<br />

ended. Bob Wilson, listen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Franks and Rhame talk<strong>in</strong>g, had<br />

no question as <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance of his unit’s mission. 14<br />

<strong>The</strong> division attack, however, did not go as planned. <strong>The</strong><br />

2nd Brigade moved forward more slowly than anticipated, coord<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

through 1-4 <strong>Cavalry</strong> with <strong>the</strong> 3rd Armored Division<br />

on its left flank while pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade <strong>to</strong> its right, and<br />

destroy<strong>in</strong>g several pla<strong>to</strong>ons of Iraqi armor. <strong>The</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade,<br />

now <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> division’s center, ran <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a fire-fight as soon as it began<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g past <strong>the</strong> 2nd Brigade. Meanwhile, <strong>the</strong> 3rd Brigade<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> division’s right flank was also <strong>in</strong> contact with<br />

Iraqi defenders. <strong>The</strong>refore, for a short time, <strong>the</strong> division’s three<br />

brigades were on-l<strong>in</strong>e and all <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> several small battles<br />

with pla<strong>to</strong>on-sized groups of Iraqi tanks. While <strong>the</strong>re was little<br />

serious Iraqi resistance, it complicated and delayed <strong>the</strong> American<br />

movement. 15<br />

In addition, <strong>the</strong> division was now fight<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong>se<br />

isolated Iraqi defenses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> worst terra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Big Red One had
