tion on <strong>the</strong> right, or eastern, side of <strong>the</strong> road. Mov<strong>in</strong>g down a<br />

low ridgel<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> cavalry attack caught <strong>the</strong> Iraqis by surprise.<br />

One T-55 tank tried <strong>to</strong> traverse its gun <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> attackers,<br />

but an American M1A1 tank destroyed it before <strong>the</strong> Iraqi ever<br />

completed its turn. In <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn part of <strong>the</strong> troop’s sec<strong>to</strong>r, <strong>1st</strong><br />

Pla<strong>to</strong>on’s SSG Gerald Broennimann destroyed <strong>the</strong> lead Iraqi armored<br />

vehicle <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> highway. 2LT Copenhaver,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Pla<strong>to</strong>on leader, detected a tank about 500 meters away<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g northward. He s<strong>to</strong>pped his Bradley, raised his TOW<br />

launcher and destroyed it with a TOW missile. SFC Moli<strong>to</strong>r detected<br />

a tank on a ridgel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> distance and fired a TOW at<br />

it. He controlled <strong>the</strong> missile from <strong>the</strong> track commander’s position.<br />

He thought he was go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> miss <strong>the</strong> tank and <strong>the</strong>n he saw<br />

<strong>the</strong> impact and explosion and <strong>the</strong> tank disappeared below <strong>the</strong><br />

ridgel<strong>in</strong>e. 27 With <strong>the</strong> road now blocked, Pope ordered <strong>the</strong> two<br />

cavalry pla<strong>to</strong>ons <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue attack<strong>in</strong>g across <strong>the</strong> road <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>ast and jo<strong>in</strong> his tank pla<strong>to</strong>on <strong>in</strong> a sweep through <strong>the</strong> objective.<br />

<strong>The</strong> roar was deafen<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> cavalrymen assaulted<br />

through <strong>the</strong> disorganized Iraqi positions. 2LT Osburn, 2nd Pla<strong>to</strong>on<br />

Leader, found that he had <strong>to</strong> pay close attention <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> location<br />

of all of <strong>the</strong> troop vehicles <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> avoid fir<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

friendly vehicles. SFC Moli<strong>to</strong>r saw Iraqi soldiers everywhere.<br />

As his Bradley rolled northward as part of <strong>the</strong> attack, his driver<br />

saw some soldiers jump <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a stationary T-55. <strong>The</strong> tank started<br />

<strong>to</strong> traverse its turrent <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong>m. Moli<strong>to</strong>r aga<strong>in</strong> s<strong>to</strong>pped his<br />

vehicle, raised <strong>the</strong> launcher and destroyed <strong>the</strong> T-55 with ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

TOW round. When <strong>the</strong> troop had f<strong>in</strong>ished its attack, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

left beh<strong>in</strong>d a dozen Iraqi vehicles <strong>in</strong> flames and now had several<br />

dozen enemy soldiers under guard. All <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>to</strong>on’s vehicles<br />

were operational with <strong>the</strong> exception of one M1A1 that had<br />

run <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>e field and susta<strong>in</strong>ed some slight damage. Fortunately,<br />

<strong>the</strong> tank could cont<strong>in</strong>ue with <strong>the</strong> troop and would not<br />

have <strong>to</strong> be replaced until after <strong>the</strong> war. 28<br />

While B Troop’s sec<strong>to</strong>r rema<strong>in</strong>ed fairly quiet, A Troop’s activity<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Basra Highway now became <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>tense.<br />

As CPT Pope f<strong>in</strong>ished his <strong>in</strong>itial engagement, he could see large<br />

numbers of Iraqi soldiers and vehicles head<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>wards him<br />

from <strong>the</strong> south and east. He dispatched 2LT Jim Copenhaver’s<br />

<strong>1st</strong> Pla<strong>to</strong>on, with its six Bradleys, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> troop’s sou<strong>the</strong>rn flank <strong>to</strong>
