<strong>Safwan</strong> 195<br />

Around 0830 hours, Wilson moved forward <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> airfield,<br />

dismounted from his Bradley, and approached several “welldressed<br />

and well-fed” Iraqi soldiers whose uniforms <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y were from a Republican Guard unit. <strong>The</strong>ir equipment<br />

appeared <strong>in</strong> very good shape and Wilson noticed trucks with<br />

fresh vegetables and o<strong>the</strong>r supplies. Wilson <strong>the</strong>n spoke,<br />

through an <strong>in</strong>terpreter, with <strong>the</strong> senior officer at <strong>the</strong> site. He <strong>to</strong>ld<br />

<strong>the</strong> Iraqi colonel that <strong>the</strong> airfield at <strong>Safwan</strong> was under American<br />

control and that he must move his men and equipment immediately.<br />

Obviously disturbed by Wilson’s words, <strong>the</strong> Iraqi officer<br />

left <strong>to</strong> speak <strong>to</strong> his commander. 38<br />

As <strong>the</strong> officer departed, four Iraqi tanks moved <strong>in</strong> front of<br />

Wilson’s command group and lowered <strong>the</strong>ir gun tubes at it.<br />

<strong>The</strong> young squadron commander realized this was no time for<br />

bravado, and calmly pulled his group south 100 yards. He <strong>the</strong>n<br />

alerted his troop commanders who were also negotiat<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

Iraqis at o<strong>the</strong>r portions of <strong>the</strong> airfield, and directed <strong>the</strong> Apache<br />

company <strong>to</strong> fly over his location <strong>in</strong> a show of force. Arriv<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

few moments later, <strong>the</strong> greatly feared attack helicopters caused<br />

a change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iraqi attitude as almost immediately, <strong>the</strong> Iraqi<br />

tanks moved back. With <strong>the</strong> situation now clarified, Wilson,<br />

along with his boss COL Jim Mowery, aga<strong>in</strong> moved forward <strong>to</strong><br />

confront <strong>the</strong> Iraqi officers. An Iraqi colonel <strong>to</strong>ld Wilson that his<br />

general said <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>to</strong> rema<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> airfield. Wilson calmly<br />

replied that if <strong>the</strong>y did not move out, <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>1st</strong> Infantry Division<br />

would attack <strong>the</strong>m with<strong>in</strong> hours. Look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> hover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Apache helicopters, <strong>the</strong> Iraqi officer said he needed <strong>to</strong> speak<br />

with his superior and departed. 39<br />

Similar situations were tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> two cavalry<br />

troop sec<strong>to</strong>rs. Not all <strong>the</strong> Iraqi soldiers were <strong>in</strong> as good as shape<br />

as <strong>the</strong> troops Wilson encountered. In many cases <strong>the</strong> cavalrymen<br />

provided rations for obviously hungry Iraqi soldiers,<br />

many of whom came out of hid<strong>in</strong>g and surrendered <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

squadron’s troopers. Just as <strong>the</strong>y had done dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> previous<br />

week, American troopers disarmed <strong>the</strong> Iraqis will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> surrender,<br />

gave <strong>the</strong>m food, and sent <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> south <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> VII<br />

Corps’s prisoner of war compounds. 40<br />

In <strong>the</strong> A Troop sec<strong>to</strong>r at about <strong>the</strong> same time that LTC Wilson<br />

was hav<strong>in</strong>g his first encounter, an Iraqi Republican Guard
