192 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Safwan</strong><br />
officer raced out of <strong>the</strong> TOC and across fifty yards of fire-illum<strong>in</strong>ated<br />
sand <strong>to</strong> wake his exhausted commander. 20<br />
Tom Rhame, awak<strong>in</strong>g from his first decent sleep <strong>in</strong> over a<br />
week, at first thought it was some k<strong>in</strong>d of a joke. Throw<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
his trousers and boots, he raced back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> command post that<br />
he had left only a couple of hours earlier. <strong>The</strong>re, Franks was on<br />
<strong>the</strong> radio want<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> know about <strong>Safwan</strong>. In a few m<strong>in</strong>utes,<br />
Rhame confirmed that <strong>Safwan</strong> was not under <strong>the</strong> control of his<br />
division and had never been an assigned objective. 21 By now, almost<br />
forty-five m<strong>in</strong>utes had gone by s<strong>in</strong>ce that first call from<br />
<strong>the</strong> corps. Rhame f<strong>in</strong>ally asked for his orders. Franks <strong>the</strong>n gave<br />
Rhame a mission <strong>to</strong> reconnoiter <strong>the</strong> area around <strong>Safwan</strong> but not<br />
<strong>to</strong> get decisively engaged. 22<br />
<strong>The</strong> 1-4 <strong>Cavalry</strong> now had one last combat mission <strong>to</strong> perform.<br />
Off <strong>the</strong> phone with <strong>the</strong> corps commander around 0240<br />
hours, Rhame radioed LTC Bob Wilson. 23 Like o<strong>the</strong>r units <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>1st</strong> Infantry Division, <strong>the</strong> cavalry had only a m<strong>in</strong>imum number<br />
of soldiers awake and on-duty. For almost a month it had been<br />
on a war foot<strong>in</strong>g and few soldiers had been able <strong>to</strong> get any sleep<br />
over <strong>the</strong> previous four days. MAJ John D<strong>in</strong>nell, who was runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> squadron tactical operations center night shift, <strong>to</strong>ok<br />
<strong>the</strong> radio call and walked over <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> squadron commander’s<br />
vehicle <strong>to</strong> ask him <strong>to</strong> come over <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> TOC. Once Wilson was<br />
awake, Rhame <strong>to</strong>ld him <strong>to</strong> move as soon as possible <strong>to</strong> recon<br />
<strong>the</strong> area near <strong>Safwan</strong>. MAJ D<strong>in</strong>nell quickly put out a warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
order <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> squadron and sent runners out <strong>to</strong><br />
wake <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> prepare <strong>the</strong> necessary<br />
orders. 24<br />
Franks, meanwhile, had second thoughts about this impromptu<br />
mission. At 0308 hours, he called Rhame back and ordered<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Infantry Division <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>p its movement. At first<br />
light, he wanted Rhame <strong>to</strong> conduct an area reconnaissance <strong>to</strong><br />
determ<strong>in</strong>e if Central Command could use <strong>the</strong> site as a meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />
area. He was <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d out if <strong>the</strong>re were any enemy troops <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
area, but not <strong>to</strong> get <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a serious fight with Iraqi forces. At 0350<br />
hours, Franks called Rhame aga<strong>in</strong>, and laid out his mission for<br />
seiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Safwan</strong>. “Intent is <strong>to</strong> not take any casualties.” <strong>The</strong><br />
corps’s log read, “If you run <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> enemy forces, <strong>the</strong>n s<strong>to</strong>p and<br />
report <strong>to</strong> CG VII Corps.” 25 Wilson’s cavalry still had <strong>the</strong> mission
