and vehicle shackles; usually <strong>the</strong>re were four of <strong>the</strong>se hook-like<br />

appendages on each vehicle. Unfortunately, <strong>the</strong>y were also detachable<br />

and, over <strong>the</strong> course of several years, <strong>the</strong>y often disappeared.<br />

Without <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> truck or Bradley could not be properly<br />

secured on <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>. Even though <strong>the</strong> squadron had<br />

ordered extra shackles, Ball, his teams, and vehicle crews spent<br />

many hours search<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong>se precious items of equipment. In<br />

addition, <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> normal friction that accompanies <strong>the</strong>se<br />

operations, such as unserviceable rail cars and vehicles leak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

oil. However, after several long days and sleepless nights, <strong>the</strong><br />

troopers had secured <strong>the</strong> squadron’s ground equipment on <strong>the</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong> and it was on <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> Beaumont, Texas. Leav<strong>in</strong>g on December<br />

5, <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> with <strong>the</strong> squadron’s equipment arrived at<br />

<strong>the</strong> port a few days later. <strong>The</strong>re, ano<strong>the</strong>r group of division soldiers<br />

loaded <strong>the</strong> vehicles on <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ships. 4<br />

In a way that would cause great concern among its leaders,<br />

<strong>the</strong> squadron’s equipment lost its unit <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> load<strong>in</strong>g<br />

process. Vessel loadmasters brought equipment on board ships<br />

based on <strong>the</strong> space available without consider<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> unit<br />

might need <strong>to</strong> organize quickly upon arrival. As a result, ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than a cohesive organization sent <strong>to</strong> sea and ready <strong>to</strong> fight on <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r end, <strong>the</strong> Quarter Horse’s fight<strong>in</strong>g power was broken<br />

down among <strong>the</strong> eighteen different vessels that carried <strong>the</strong> Big<br />

Red One <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Persian Gulf. Of course, by <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>s arrived<br />

<strong>in</strong> Beaumont it was fairly obvious that <strong>the</strong>re was no need<br />

for <strong>the</strong> command <strong>to</strong> be configured as if <strong>in</strong> an amphibious land<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce Operation Desert Shield had apparently deterred any<br />

Iraqi attack. S<strong>in</strong>ce carry<strong>in</strong>g capacity and speed of deployment<br />

were now more important than combat capability, <strong>the</strong> loadmasters<br />

did <strong>the</strong> best <strong>the</strong>y could <strong>to</strong> fit all <strong>the</strong> odd-sized vehicles <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> fewest ships possible. That rationale was lost, however, on<br />

<strong>the</strong> officers watch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir units’ grow<strong>in</strong>g disorganization. 5<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> shipp<strong>in</strong>g ground vehicles and equipment, <strong>the</strong><br />

division had <strong>to</strong> transport its aircraft and special support equipment.<br />

Soon after Thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g, CPT Chris<strong>to</strong>pher Philbrick,<br />

Warrant Officer (WO) Gary D. Notest<strong>in</strong>e and a team of avia<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

and aviation mechanics flew <strong>to</strong> Ell<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n Field near Hous<strong>to</strong>n,<br />

Texas, <strong>to</strong> serve as <strong>the</strong> squadron’s advanced party for <strong>the</strong> helicopter<br />

deployment. On December 4, <strong>the</strong> division’s <strong>4th</strong> (Aviation)
