148 <strong>The</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Safwan</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y were supported by Iraqi <strong>in</strong>fantry units. A slightly mis-oriented<br />

Bradley pla<strong>to</strong>on, attempt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> follow <strong>the</strong> M1 tanks,<br />

moved across <strong>the</strong> front of <strong>the</strong>se Iraqi positions, illum<strong>in</strong>ated by<br />

burn<strong>in</strong>g vehicles beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> Iraqis <strong>to</strong>ok advantage of<br />

this excellent target and opened fire from three directions. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>itial volley hit a Bradley, kill<strong>in</strong>g three American soldiers. 40 An<br />

American tank company trail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lead units observed <strong>the</strong><br />

Iraqi fire and jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> melee, quickly destroy<strong>in</strong>g three T-55s<br />

before <strong>the</strong>y could get off ano<strong>the</strong>r shot. At <strong>the</strong> same time, several<br />

small antitank rockets hit some of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r tanks and Bradleys.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> perspective of <strong>the</strong> tank gunners look<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>rmal sights of <strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g M1 tanks, <strong>the</strong>se flashes appeared<br />

<strong>to</strong> be T-55 tanks shoot<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> young and exhausted<br />

American gunners, conv<strong>in</strong>ced <strong>the</strong>y were fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st a determ<strong>in</strong>ed enemy, opened fire, hitt<strong>in</strong>g three more<br />

American vehicles. 41<br />

When <strong>the</strong> confus<strong>in</strong>g melee <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 3rd Brigade’s sec<strong>to</strong>r was<br />

over, <strong>1st</strong> Infantry Division crews had destroyed five of <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

tanks and four Bradleys. Six brigade soldiers perished <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

attacks and thirty o<strong>the</strong>rs were wounded. Ra<strong>the</strong>r than “press <strong>the</strong><br />

attack” as those at Third Army and Central Command were demand<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

42 Weisman decided <strong>to</strong> pull his unit back, consolidate,<br />

and use artillery <strong>to</strong> destroy <strong>the</strong> aggressive Iraqi <strong>in</strong>fantry. 43 Once<br />

on l<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong>y would be prepared <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue.<br />

By 0030 hours (February 27), one hour after <strong>the</strong> attack had<br />

begun, <strong>the</strong> two attack<strong>in</strong>g brigades of <strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Infantry Division<br />

were arrayed along <strong>the</strong> 75 East<strong>in</strong>g. 44 For <strong>the</strong> next three hours,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y methodically crossed <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ten kilometers of Objective<br />

Norfolk. <strong>The</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade commander, follow<strong>in</strong>g just beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

his lead battalions, thought he was “watch<strong>in</strong>g a v<strong>in</strong>tage<br />

black and white movie. Everyth<strong>in</strong>g seemed <strong>to</strong> move <strong>in</strong> slow<br />

motion.” Such was <strong>the</strong> thunder of battle that “<strong>the</strong>re was no noticeable<br />

sound that anyone could recall.” 45 As <strong>the</strong>y slowly advanced,<br />

M1A1 tank commanders acquired <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rmal images<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Iraqi tanks or <strong>in</strong>fantry fight<strong>in</strong>g vehicles long before <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were <strong>the</strong>mselves spotted. Pla<strong>to</strong>on leaders, team commanders,<br />

and even battalion commanders issued unit-wide fire commands.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> defend<strong>in</strong>g Iraqis had any idea what was happen<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir whole l<strong>in</strong>e of vehicles exploded. 46
