Combat Command Carter 83<br />
With Gross’s task force now <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>to</strong>r, Wilson was able<br />
<strong>to</strong> pull one pla<strong>to</strong>on at a time from each troop off <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
and back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> assembly area. <strong>The</strong>re <strong>the</strong> unit commanders supervised<br />
<strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se pla<strong>to</strong>ons would need dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> assault,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g conduct<strong>in</strong>g a zone reconnaissance and a hasty<br />
attack. <strong>The</strong>se skills were perish<strong>in</strong>g while <strong>the</strong> troopers occupied<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir stationary observation posts. This tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was especially<br />
important for CPT Pope who had only worked with his pla<strong>to</strong>on<br />
leaders for a short period of time, and would pay great dividends<br />
later. Combat crews cont<strong>in</strong>ued prepar<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong>ir upcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
assault, rotat<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>to</strong> a fir<strong>in</strong>g range <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rear. <strong>The</strong>re,<br />
<strong>the</strong> tank crews f<strong>in</strong>ally had <strong>the</strong> chance <strong>to</strong> calibrate <strong>the</strong>ir guns<br />
with <strong>the</strong>ir optical sights and fire 120-mm service rounds for <strong>the</strong><br />
first time. Mortar squads practiced adjust<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>direct fires,<br />
and scout crews, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir new M3A2 <strong>Cavalry</strong> Fight<strong>in</strong>g Vehicles,<br />
practiced acquir<strong>in</strong>g, and without actually pull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trigger,<br />
engag<strong>in</strong>g targets. It <strong>to</strong>ok time <strong>to</strong> work out all of <strong>the</strong> little problems<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new systems. <strong>The</strong> air troops also used this time <strong>to</strong><br />
tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir troopers. <strong>The</strong> troop commanders and <strong>the</strong>ir pla<strong>to</strong>on<br />
leaders worked with <strong>the</strong>ir pilots <strong>to</strong> develop <strong>the</strong> scout-weapon<br />
teamwork needed <strong>to</strong> ensure survival on <strong>the</strong> battlefield. Daily<br />
air patrols along <strong>the</strong> screen l<strong>in</strong>e helped <strong>to</strong> establish <strong>the</strong> needed<br />
rout<strong>in</strong>es and coord<strong>in</strong>ation requirements between flight operations,<br />
<strong>the</strong> squadron tactical operations center, and <strong>the</strong> ground/<br />
air troops. As a rule, <strong>the</strong> squadron tried <strong>to</strong> match C Troop avia<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
with A Troop and <strong>the</strong> D Troop avia<strong>to</strong>rs with B Troop. CPT<br />
Pete Smith’s aircraft ma<strong>in</strong>tenance teams did a masterful job of<br />
support<strong>in</strong>g all of this air activity by keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> squadron’s aircraft<br />
repaired and serviced. This was not an easy task as <strong>the</strong><br />
flow of repair parts was not as steady as it was stateside and <strong>the</strong><br />
fly<strong>in</strong>g environment was far more hostile. 6<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> most serious equipment problems encountered<br />
by <strong>the</strong> squadron dur<strong>in</strong>g this period was with <strong>the</strong> Bradley’s<br />
TOW missile systems. One night, a large explosion startled <strong>the</strong><br />
command and everyone went on alert. Ra<strong>the</strong>r than enemy soldiers,<br />
however, a CFV driver <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance area had<br />
caused <strong>the</strong> commotion. As he turned on <strong>the</strong> vehicle’s master<br />
power switch, <strong>the</strong> two live TOW missiles suddenly launched<br />
and flew north, explod<strong>in</strong>g harmlessly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert. At first, <strong>the</strong>
