staff and commanders <strong>to</strong> assume a potential deployment.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> essential deployment aspects of Wilson’s tasks would<br />

not change, <strong>the</strong> Iraqi <strong>in</strong>vasion now modified many of <strong>the</strong>ir details<br />

and gave him and his officers a renewed sense of purpose.<br />

Many cavalry troopers envisioned <strong>the</strong>mselves fly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Saudi<br />

Arabia <strong>to</strong> re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> units from <strong>the</strong> XVIII Corps. S<strong>in</strong>ce Rhame<br />

had no solid <strong>in</strong>structions, he and o<strong>the</strong>r officers were simply<br />

prudent <strong>in</strong> anticipat<strong>in</strong>g a combat role for <strong>the</strong> command.<br />

<strong>Squadron</strong> leaders now began pay<strong>in</strong>g attention <strong>to</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

details that <strong>the</strong>y often glossed over. For starters, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g soldiers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir positions longer so <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

improve <strong>the</strong>ir proficiency. Troopers 2 <strong>in</strong>ven<strong>to</strong>ried unit equipment<br />

weapons fir<strong>in</strong>g events, maneuver exercises from squad through<br />

pla<strong>to</strong>on level, and staff tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions. <strong>The</strong> squadron also<br />

participated <strong>in</strong> externally sponsored or evaluated events, such<br />

as rotations <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Center and a demand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

series of simulated combat experiences, <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude a rotation<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Fort Leavenworth-controlled Battle Command Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Program, which tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> squadron, brigade, and division<br />

staffs. <strong>The</strong> squadron had several of <strong>the</strong>se events scheduled<br />
