For such a short conflict, <strong>the</strong> <strong>1991</strong> Persian Gulf War generated<br />

an amaz<strong>in</strong>g array of books and articles. In addition, this was <strong>the</strong><br />

first war supported by computers, electronic mail, and copy<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> production of many brief<strong>in</strong>g charts,<br />

after-action reports, and government documents generated<br />

from <strong>the</strong> field. This bibliography represents only a fraction of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation available, but should assist future scholars <strong>in</strong><br />

ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir own research plans.<br />

Government Documents<br />

Each command that participated on Operation Desert S<strong>to</strong>rm<br />

generated a large number of diverse documents. Orig<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />

most of <strong>the</strong>se documents were part of <strong>the</strong> VII Corps After Action<br />

Report archived at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Today,<br />

many are also found on <strong>the</strong> Internet and are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> arrive<br />

for process<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> National Archives. <strong>The</strong>se documents consist<br />

of daily staff journals, operation orders, fragmentary orders,<br />

after-action reports, and brief<strong>in</strong>g slides. Specific citations<br />

are conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> notes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> United States Army of <strong>1991</strong> was just complet<strong>in</strong>g a revolution<br />

<strong>in</strong> military art that began <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1970s. <strong>The</strong> culm<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of this thought was Field Manual 100-5, Operations (May 1986). It<br />

was probably one of <strong>the</strong> most staffed, exam<strong>in</strong>ed, and used doctr<strong>in</strong>al<br />

publications of all time and generally reflects <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> army <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field. Only recently published was Field Manual<br />

71-100, Division Operations (June 1990). In general, <strong>the</strong> pace<br />

of doctr<strong>in</strong>al development at <strong>the</strong> tactical level had placed a variety<br />

of old manuals and a variety of service-school drafts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hands of <strong>the</strong> users. Fortunately, <strong>the</strong>se documents generally re-<br />
