<strong>to</strong>ok out some palm fronds that he had been sav<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

<strong>Safwan</strong> and distributed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> those who had ga<strong>the</strong>red for a<br />

religious service. Even for those not especially devout, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was someth<strong>in</strong>g mystical about be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Land, not far<br />

from <strong>the</strong> home of Abraham and <strong>the</strong> early Hebrew tribes. <strong>The</strong> division’s<br />

chapla<strong>in</strong>s did <strong>the</strong>ir best <strong>to</strong> get around <strong>to</strong> all <strong>the</strong> battalions<br />

and conduct services for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terested soldiers. 6<br />

With <strong>the</strong> combat over, soldiers began <strong>to</strong> depart and arrive at<br />

<strong>the</strong> squadron. CPT Eric Esplund from division G2 replaced CPT<br />

Seel<strong>in</strong>ger, who surrendered his role as S2 and headed over <strong>to</strong> a<br />

company command <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> division’s military <strong>in</strong>telligence battalion.<br />

1SG Parkey left A Troop for <strong>the</strong> S3 Section <strong>to</strong> replace<br />

SGM Ken Shields who was return<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>to</strong> retire.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> squadron left for <strong>the</strong> 2nd <strong>Cavalry</strong>’s Sec<strong>to</strong>r, Bob<br />

Wilson promoted Parkey <strong>to</strong> sergeant major.<br />

Much of this activity was accomplished <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bedou<strong>in</strong>s who now began return<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. It seemed<br />

that you could not go <strong>to</strong>o far without runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> an encampment.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were sheep and camel herders, and it was strange<br />

<strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong>ir goatsk<strong>in</strong> or wool-and-cot<strong>to</strong>n tents with a television<br />

antenna stuck out <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p of one of <strong>the</strong>m and a Mercedes truck<br />

parked alongside <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> desert. It was a strange<br />

way of life that most of <strong>the</strong> soldiers could not understand.<br />

<strong>The</strong> division commander was determ<strong>in</strong>ed that his command<br />

would keep its fight<strong>in</strong>g edge, just <strong>in</strong> case <strong>the</strong> peace talks broke<br />

down. As a result, he had his G3 tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g section establish a series<br />

of fir<strong>in</strong>g ranges throughout <strong>the</strong> division sec<strong>to</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

brigades operated most of <strong>the</strong>se facilities. <strong>The</strong> major problem<br />

with <strong>the</strong>m was that <strong>the</strong>se were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Iraqi desert without natural<br />

backs<strong>to</strong>ps or range fans. If a tank round missed its target, it<br />

could travel many miles before it lost its momentum or hit some<br />

unanticipated target. With <strong>the</strong> Bedou<strong>in</strong>s return<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>the</strong><br />

probability of hitt<strong>in</strong>g one became greater and <strong>the</strong> squadron’s avia<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

flew throughout <strong>the</strong> range area <strong>to</strong> move <strong>the</strong> natives and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir goat herds out of <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e of fire and <strong>to</strong> safer surround<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

CPT Sauer and SFC Garza planned <strong>the</strong> squadron’s range participation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> squadron’s ground troops used <strong>the</strong> <strong>1st</strong> Brigade’s<br />

range from March 26 <strong>to</strong> 29, fir<strong>in</strong>g small arms, mach<strong>in</strong>e guns,<br />

hand grenades and o<strong>the</strong>r explosives. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fir<strong>in</strong>g practice,
