possibly a third berm hid<strong>in</strong>g ano<strong>the</strong>r tank. Iraqi soldiers were<br />

also now visible <strong>in</strong> a number of fight<strong>in</strong>g positions. Apparently,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Iraqi crews could not see <strong>the</strong> command group but heard<br />

<strong>the</strong>m and were com<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> bunkers. Obviously, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were enemy vehicles <strong>in</strong> and around <strong>the</strong> squadron screen l<strong>in</strong>e. 57<br />

Realiz<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> command group did not have <strong>the</strong> firepower<br />

<strong>to</strong> clear this gap, Wilson ordered CPT Bills <strong>to</strong> send over<br />

a pla<strong>to</strong>on <strong>in</strong> support. 2LT Adrian Lowndes’s 2nd Pla<strong>to</strong>on<br />

moved forward with two tanks and two Bradleys and his tanks<br />

began <strong>to</strong> “surgically” remove vehicles that were beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

squadron’s screen at short ranges of between only 50 <strong>to</strong> 400 meters.<br />

58 Burdan and Wilson jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> fight also, destroy<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

BMP, a T-55 tank, and suppress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dismounted <strong>in</strong>fantry <strong>in</strong><br />

source of <strong>the</strong> hostile shoot<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y responded with <strong>in</strong>accurate<br />

but frighten<strong>in</strong>g artillery fire on both B Troop and <strong>the</strong> squadron’s<br />

supply vehicles. Iraqi green and red star clusters caused momentary<br />

concern as American crews, suspect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> use of poison<br />

gas, put on <strong>the</strong>ir chemical protective masks. A Troop, upw<strong>in</strong>d<br />

from <strong>the</strong> potential strike, cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

situation. After a few tests, it was obvious that <strong>the</strong>re were no<br />

chemicals, and Bills gave <strong>the</strong> “all clear.” 60<br />

Lowndes’s Pla<strong>to</strong>on and <strong>the</strong> Command Group destroyed<br />

five tanks and a variety of o<strong>the</strong>r vehicles <strong>in</strong> that short fire-fight.<br />

<strong>The</strong> troop’s o<strong>the</strong>r pla<strong>to</strong>ons contributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> carnage, destroy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a number of tanks and <strong>in</strong>fantry carriers. Meanwhile, both<br />

troops reported o<strong>the</strong>r Iraqi vehicles mov<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> front<br />

and rear of <strong>the</strong> squadron’s screen l<strong>in</strong>e. B Troop, for example,<br />

ambushed a small convoy of troop-carry<strong>in</strong>g trucks try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

move over a small ridge <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> east. 61<br />

What <strong>the</strong> squadron did not know at <strong>the</strong> time was that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were near <strong>the</strong> IPSA Pipel<strong>in</strong>e and this l<strong>in</strong>e’s service road was <strong>the</strong><br />

fastest and most direct route between sou<strong>the</strong>ast Iraq and <strong>the</strong><br />

Iraqi forces aligned along <strong>the</strong> western Kuwaiti border. Because<br />

<strong>the</strong> Iraqi high command used this route <strong>to</strong> support units <strong>in</strong> both<br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn Iraq and Kuwait, supply depots, fuel tanks, ammunition<br />

depots, and o<strong>the</strong>r logistics <strong>in</strong>stallations l<strong>in</strong>ed both sides of<br />

<strong>the</strong> road. Unfortunately, this road did not appear on any of <strong>the</strong><br />

squadron’s maps. What <strong>the</strong> squadron faced that even<strong>in</strong>g was a
